Vets Go Wild (16 Days)

Vets Go Wild is a conservation based veterinary module that was established in 2008 and its objective is to conduct theoretical and practical training focused on the role of veterinary science in the context of African wildlife conservation.

The 16-day module provides a field based wildlife veterinary management programme for international veterinary students with an interest and passion for wildlife.   The experience is both adventurous and educational with the main emphasis been on academic training and practical experience. *Extra Mural Study (EMS) requirements are met, so the 16-day module counts towards fulfilling these criteria.

Practical elements of the module may include game capture, translocation of game, the reintroduction of species into these reserves, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, animal husbandry at the Born Free Rescue and Education Centre, predator monitoring and much more.

Elements of the theory may include topics such as the history of conservation in Southern Africa, Wildlife habitats, environment & ecology, Wildlife management, Immobilisation anesthetics, Diseases and vectors, Conservation medicine, Anatomy & Capture techniques.

The program also provides the students the opportunity to explore Southern Africa’s culture and to enjoy its magnificent hospitality.

  • Vets Go Wild has truly been a life changing experience! Each day was different from the next and brought new and exciting challenges. I’ve progressed so much as a veterinary professional and I’m much more confident in my abilities! Where else would I be able to give reversal drugs to a giraffe and take blood samples for DNA testing from lions. Not only has this but I have a new found respect for Dr Fowlds work. I now understand the seriousness of the challenges rhinos face in the wild. And I genuinely believe that we as vets, friends and members of the community can make an impact and change the face of these beautiful creatures.

Confronting major issues facing the veterinary profession

BSAVA Summit is a new 2-day event that will tackle some of the contentious clinical and non-clinical issues facing the veterinary profession today.

Delegates will lead and shape discussions through a series of interactive workshops facilitated by experts, paired with a series of insightful keynote seminars delivered by key opinion leaders.

Shaping the future of veterinary practice

Day one focuses on ‘The Profession Today’ and topics will include workforce issues, telemedicine, specialism, the future of advanced practitioners and regulation of the profession.

Day two explores the future of ‘The Profession Tomorrow’ with topics including communication, over-diagnosis, over-treatment and innovation.

Confirmed facilitators include RCVS CEO Lizzie Lockett, BEVA President Renate Weller, Director of Clinical Research and Excellence in Practice at VetPartners Rachel Dean and Small Animal Medicine Specialist and Advanced Practitioner in Veterinary Cardiology Dr Kit Sturgess.

BSAVA Summit will address the rising demand for a space to debate important topics, challenge mindsets and question accepted benchmarks. Following feedback from our members and the profession, Summit will revolutionise veterinary conference norms with a free-flow approach to champion active debate, discussion and reflection.
