AMRRIC’s volunteering program – Current opportunity for 2 member veterinary volunteers

An opportunity for two volunteers (2 x vets or 1 vet + 1 vet nurse) to assist with veterinary service delivery in the Shire of Derby/West Kimberley, WA.  The volunteers would be assisting the Shire’s Environmental Health team and Dr Stephen Cutter to deliver a companion animal health program from Sunday 6th – Saturday 12th May 2018 (inclusive).  It is planned that the team will service Fitzroy Crossing town and surrounding communities.

Travel details will be confirmed with selected applicants, however volunteers must arrange and pay for their own flights to the nearest regional centre; for this trip this is Broome, WA. Depending on flight arrival times, volunteers may additionally need to seek and pay for their own accommodation in Broome for one night before and/or after the program.  Transport from Broome to the communities will be provided in a 4WD vehicle.  Accommodation will be a mix of camping, dongas or hotel.  Costs of accommodation and/or camping equipment will be provided by the Shire of Derby West Kimberley for the duration of the program.  Please note that if you intend to arrive early or stay later than the program, you will need to seek your own accommodation.

Fitzroy crossing is approximately 2500km from Perth, and is surrounded by spectacular Kimberly landscapes.  You can read more about the region here.  The program involves considerable travel on dirt roads and working conditions may be hot, possibly dusty with flies.

If you are interested and it has been some time since you first applied to be a volunteer, please refresh your memory on AMRRIC’s volunteering program by reading our Volunteering FAQs.

Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program for Women, Australian Agriculture

Australian agriculture has joined forces to forge a new pathway for women in ag leadership with the establishment of the Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program.

Women have been the backbone of farming since agriculture began in our nation.

However, the fact remains, female representation on farm is not matched in the senior ranks and around the board tables of our farm representative organisations and agribusinesses. And our industry is poorer for it.

When I take a look around the organisations advocating on behalf of farmers and agribusinesses servicing our industry, there is a distinct lack of female representation.

I believe this is out of step with actual farm businesses, the vast majority of which are family owned and where women absolutely play an equal role.

    – Fiona Simson, President, National Farmers’ Federation

About the Program

There are two main elements of the Diversity in Ag Leadership Program:

1)      An opportunity for agribusiness and ag-representative bodies to commit to auditing their gender diversity and to formally pledge to making meaningful change towards evening the gender ledger, and

2)      An opportunity for aspiring female leaders to benefit from one-on-one mentoring. Graduates of the program will go on to be a part of a valuable alumni of skilled female leaders with aspirations to apply their leadership skills across the agricultural sector.

Applications now open

Applications are now open for the Diversity in Ag Leadership Program.

  • Women over 25 years of age, who have already started their leadership journey, are encouraged to apply.

  • The names and contact details of three (3) referees are required.
  • Applicants must, except in approved exceptions, be available to travel to Canberra for two one-day events during May 2018 and October 2018 (dates to be confirmed) and commit to dedicating a cumulative additional 75 hours to the program.
  • The NFF will cover the approved costs of travel and associated expenses to a cap of $4500.
  • Applications must be submitted by 5pm Eastern Standard Time (EST) 12 April, 2018.

2. How would you describe ‘leadership’?
3. Outline your leadership aspirations and the steps you have taken to date to realise these aspirations.
4. Describe why you are interested in being a part of the Diversity in Agriculture Leadership Program?

6. Outline your time availability to commit to the Program, should you be successful, keeping in mind the requirement is to dedicate a minimum of 75 hours to the program.
7. Do you believe your gender has constrained your leadership aspirations to date? Are there any other factors that have been restrictive? (your answer to this question won’t be assessed as part of your application – we’re just interested to know!)

Community Resilience Innovation Program – Grant Funding for Emergency Management – Natural Disaster Resilience, NSW

No closing date provided

Community Resilience Innovation Program

The Community Resilience Innovation Program (CRIP) is a scheme under the Natural Disaster Resilience Program, funded by the New South Wales and Commonwealth Governments through the National Partnership Agreement on Natural Disaster Resilience.

The CRIP supports a broad range of community-led projects designed to increase all-hazard disaster preparedness and build community capacity and resilience. CRIP projects are based on collaboration and partnership between local community organisations and emergency services agencies.

CRIP aims to:

  • Foster ways to effectively engage the local community in creative, community focussed activities that build local capacity and capability for disaster resilience
  • Develop effective partnerships and build networks between local community organisations, councils, businesses and emergency services agencies
  • Share knowledge and lessons learnt about approaches and models through project evaluation
  • Support initiatives that can be integrated into current business and maintained in the longer term

Projects supported through the CRIP are designed to respond to the specific needs and characteristics of the local community. Projects may involve the entire community or be tailored to the needs of particular groups, such as people identified as more vulnerable to disaster events.

A focus of CRIP is capturing lessons learned about new ways of working, what works and what could be done differently, so that successful projects can be replicated in other communities. For this reason project evaluation must be built into the project.

Projects should be completed within 12 months. Where there is a strong case, projects needing up to 2 years to complete can be considered.

CRIP has a limited budget and not all applications can be funded.

NSW State Level Emergency Risk Assessment

CRIP is consistent with the recently launched NSW State Level Emergency Risk Assessment which has identified 10 priorities, including ‘coordinated approach to community engagement for emergency risks’.

National Strategy for Disaster Resilience Community Engagement Frame work

The National Strategy for Disaster Resilience Community Engagement Framework provides guidance to those working in emergency management. Applicants should use the Framework as a basis for designing community engagement strategies for their project.

Who can apply:

  • Non-government organisations including not-for-profit organisations and local community groups
  • Local councils
  • Government agencies with emergency management responsibilities.

Applications from non-government organisations who do NOT have emergency management responsibilities and are NOT partnering with a government agency with emergency management responsibilities must complete Section 1 of the CRIP Endorsement Form, available on the online CRIP Application Form, through enQuire.
