About the opportunity
The Rotating Internship position operates within the Faculty of Science’s veterinary teaching hospital in Camperdown. The faculty provides a range of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in veterinary and associated disciplines. The teaching hospital provides the clinical learning experience for veterinary students and staff engaged in professional training programs. The hospital is a commercial centre and provides a range of veterinary services to the public.
The rotating internship is designed to further develop the appointee’s skills in a range of disciplines, with a goal of preparing appointees for a future residency. Interns spend over 60% of their clinical rotations with the emergency and critical care service, and primarily have sole case responsibility after hours. The remaining time is divided evenly among anaesthesia, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging, and surgery with varying levels of case responsibility and opportunities to learn from registered specialists in multiple fields.
Interns will participate in weekly morbidity and mortality rounds, journal club, and seminars, as well as be expected to produce a presentation for grand rounds as part of their general duties. Whilst rotating through the referral services, the interns will also participate in cage-side rounds and journal clubs for each service. Interns will be involved with supervising and assessing final year students during their rotation.
In this position, you will:
- provide high quality veterinary clinical services to small animals
- provide clinical teaching and support to veterinary students in the veterinary teaching hospital
- supervise and perform routine treatment of hospitalised patients
- provide excellent small animal services under the supervision of senior veterinarians in emergency and critical care, internal medicine, surgery, diagnostic imaging and anaesthesia
