Many institutions, veterinary hospitals and clinics, and government organizations offer externships for veterinary students to increase their knowledge and exposure to clinical aquatic veterinary medicine. The listings below are designed to help WAVMA veterinary student members locate suitable externships. Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium provides veterinary students the unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of aquatic animal medicine at one of the largest aquariums in the world. We are fortunate to have a nutritionist, full commissary staff, a water chemist, and team of veterinary and laboratory technicians. There are three full time clinical veterinarians, a veterinary resident, and a veterinary intern. Through a partnership with the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, we have an established aquatic veterinary pathology program as well as a growing clinical partnership with the zoological medicine service. The Georgia Aquarium has a state of the art veterinary hospital with equipment comparable to that found at a teaching hospital or specialty practice.

The Aquarium of the Pacific offers 4 externships/preceptorship in the veterinary services department for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. Each position is a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks depending on the students’ availability.

The Marine Mammal Center

The Marine Mammal Center veterinary externship program provides veterinary students in their final/clinical year of school the opportunity to gain exposure to marine mammal medicine and rehabilitation. Under the direct supervision of veterinary staff and volunteers, students will participate in animal husbandry, stranding response, daily clinical rounds, recordkeeping, veterinary diagnostics, surgical and anesthetic procedures, and necropsies. The student will complete a project during the externship and present the results to the staff and volunteers during the last week of their rotation.
