Operating from within the Tick Fever Centre (TFC), you will be involved in a team-based role where you will undertake veterinary support to ensure tick fever vaccine is readily available, safe, effective, and affordable, and the highest national and international standards relevant to control tick fever are maintained.

 

• Use specialist veterinary expertise in relation to tick fever disease to undertake and/or support vaccine production and dispatch, field or laboratory-based disease surveillance, investigation and research activities using relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs), protocols or methodologies to generate valid data and achieve ongoing compliance with relevant quality standards and workplace health and safety requirements. This includes:
­- contributing tick fever disease causative agent expertise to diagnostic section
­- undertaking and maintaining competency of microscopy diagnostic testing to support vaccine production
­- investigate complaints relating to vaccine efficacy and untoward reactions and reports to management and assist with the implementation of corrective action as necessary
­- contributing skills and knowledge relevant to the maintenance of cattle used in tick fever vaccine production and research
­- undertake routine veterinary medical and surgical work, including splenectomising calves for vaccine production
­- support the running of a breeding herd system and quarantine testing program that excludes selected pathogens
­- compliance with relevant quality standards including but not limited to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) and Animal Ethics.

• Plan and design routine field investigations or animal trial or laboratory experiments that align with team and/or operational objectives such as animal trials to test vaccine infectivity and efficacy and projects aimed to improve vaccine manufacture and distribution. This includes exercising professional judgement (under indirect supervision) to:
­- seek relevant information from a range of sources (review of scientific and other literature)
­- manage any risk within the operational activities or experimental design
­- define appropriate resources, materials and equipment
­- identify appropriate techniques and sampling methodologies
­- determine appropriate data gathering parameters (e.g. sample type, frequency, and preservation methods).

• Undertake data collation, recording and retrieval using relevant information systems such as the TFC animal records database.

• Under indirect supervision, independently use appropriate quantitative and subjective methods to interpret veterinary findings for differential diagnosis of animal diseases or decisions relevant to export.

• Manage own work priorities to ensure assigned tasks are undertaken effectively and efficiently to achieve operational/team aims and deliverables.

• With indirect guidance and supervision:
­- exercise independent professional judgement based on comparison of findings with relevant scientific literature;
­- write technical/scientific reports, papers and recommendations for review and further input by senior veterinarians; and/or
­- perform technical and scientific literature reviews to collate information and contribute advice to support operational risk-based decision-making and provide guidance to external stakeholders on animal disease issues

• Positively and effectively collaborate with colleagues to actively identify and resolve problems, address veterinary challenges, and deliver innovative solutions for vaccine production and distribution. Where relevant, this may include:
­- contributing to ongoing improvement, validation and currency of veterinary practices within work area;
-­ developing, optimising, and validating analytical methods to address emerging needs; and/or
­- providing initial review and feedback of peer and broader teamwork outputs.
