Description
Biosecurity is complex and preparedness against a wide range of threats is critical to the success of our agricultural industries which are an essential part of the Queensland economy and represent thousands of good jobs in every region of this state.
As a Veterinarian Officer, you will provide technical leadership at the local level to facilitate effective and efficient delivery of the relevant prevention, preparedness, response or operational plans. You will provide technical advice in areas including epidemiology (e.g. surveillance, specimen collection, pest/disease investigation, prevention) for relevant significant pests and diseases. You will demonstrate both technical and strategic understanding of local preparedness needs/goals and contribute this knowledge towards planning processes, selection of appropriate training and engagement methods, external stakeholder engagement and policy development. You will share your expertise and experience to enhance staff capability development.
As the position will be required to participate in emergency responses, there will be a requirement to travel, and the successful candidate will be required to undertake training to enable them to apply their everyday work capabilities within a disaster or biosecurity response environment.
Key tasks and responsibilities of the role (your contribution)
• Independently conduct and oversee activities to achieve efficient and effective delivery of preparedness and operational goals working and in accordance with relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs) and work instructions. This includes:
- addressing issues of high biosecurity risk/complexity and/or requiring a level of specialist technical capability; and
- contributing high level technical understanding of local biosecurity issues to strategic planning.
• Use specialist veterinary expertise to undertake and support field disease surveillance and investigation activities and epidemiology using relevant standard operating procedures, protocols or methodologies to generate valid data and achieve ongoing compliance.
• As defined in the relevant preparedness and operational plan, independently undertake and oversee tasks contributing to the protection of the Queensland biosecurity system.
Associated tasks may include:
- conducting field-based monitoring, surveillance, auditing and treatment activities;
- undertaking data/information gathering, recording and collation;
- gathering evidence to assist investigations of potential biosecurity threats and legislative breaches; and
- providing authoritative technical advice to internal stakeholders.
• Drive the establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships internally, and with local industry bodies and stakeholders to facilitate effective biosecurity system risk management. This may include:
- providing respected, authoritative technical advice on complex issues;
- presenting information aligned to Queensland government policy at local and state forums/committees/community events; and/or
- providing quality training to internal and external stakeholders to improve their capabilities.
