About the Animal Ethics Committee
The Animal Ethics Committee at Austin Health is constituted according to the Code, the Act and the Regulations. The role and responsibility of the AEC is to ensure:
- The provision of a high standard of animal welfare that is necessary to sustain excellence in research that all care and use of animals is conducted in accordance with relevant legislation and Austin Health’s policies, procedures and guidelines.
- that the use of animals is justified, provides for the welfare of those animals, and animals are replaced with other methods where possible
- the number of animals used are reduced while still allowing for valid scientific results
- protocols are refined to minimise the harmful impact on animals
About the role
As a member of the Animal Ethics Committee, you will be responsible for helping to review applications involving animals at monthly meetings.
For this role you will be required to:
- Availble to attend monthly meetings from February to December
- Respond to out of session items as required from time to time outside of monthly meetings
- Contribute to discussion and bring an independent view
- Abide by Austin Health's corporate policies
- Sign a confidentiality agreement
About you
To be successful in this role you'll bring with you:
- Have a qualification in veterinary science that is recognised for registration as a veterinary surgeon in Australia
- Experience relevant to the welfare of small animals
- Ability to interpret legislation and policy. Please note that training will be provided on your responsibilites under current Victorian and Federal legislation.
