AFMA is seeking suitably qualified individual to fill the role of Fisheries Project Officer in our Electronic Monitoring Program within the Fisheries Information and Services Branch in our Canberra office.

This non-ongoing position is until 30 June 2025.

As the Fisheries Project Officer, you will be working with the Fisheries Project Manager and Electronic Monitoring Senior Manager to expand and implement electronic monitoring programs across Commonwealth fisheries consistent with recent investment from government.

In this role, you will assist with the implementation and expansion of fine-scale data collection to support evidence-based decision making and transparency for the fishing industry. You will support the Fisheries Project Manager with the coordination, execution, control, and completion of projects that are aligned with AFMA’s strategy, commitments, and goals.

As well as applying your project management skills, you will also undertake preliminary data assessments, review, and improve fishery data plans, develop electronic monitoring project plans, manage client expectations, contractors, procurement, and coordinate equipment trials for fishing vessels.

You may be required to travel nationwide for in-field site visits and to assist the Fishery Project Manager to strategically engage and collaborate with relevant stakeholders on electronic monitoring trials and implementation. Such stakeholders may include; industry representatives, fishers, scientists, electronic monitoring service providers, Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and state/territory fishery agencies.

You will be required to work closely with fishery managers from a range of different fisheries, such as the bottom trawl fisheries in the tropics to the long line fisheries in the Southern Ocean.
You will also work with the Electronic Monitoring Team to engage across AFMA’s business areas to deliver strategic outcomes that supports the delivery of legislative, regulatory and policy outcomes for Commonwealth fisheries management.

The Electronic Monitoring Team is also leading AFMA’s engagement in the national electronic monitoring dialogue and supporting AFMA’s engagement in Australia’s whole of government engagement in international fora, including through regional fisheries management organisations to which Australia is a party.  You will provide strategic support to these endeavors.

  • AFMA staff are employed under the Australian Public Service Act 1999. All applicants must be Australian citizens.
  • The successful applicant must hold or have the ability to obtain and maintain a baseline security clearance.
