Aquatic Veterinary Student Externships USA<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Many institutions, veterinary hospitals and clinics, and government organizations offer externships for veterinary students to increase their knowledge and exposure to clinical aquatic veterinary medicine. The listings below are designed to help WAVMA veterinary student members locate suitable externships. Students should check with their veterinary school to determine if academic credit is accepted for a specific externship<\/em>.<\/strong>Georgia Aquarium<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Georgia Aquarium<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n

The Georgia Aquarium provides veterinary students the unique opportunity to gain experience in the field of aquatic animal medicine at one of the largest aquariums in the world. We are fortunate to have a nutritionist, full commissary staff, a water chemist, and team of veterinary and laboratory technicians. There are three full time clinical veterinarians, a veterinary resident, and a veterinary intern. Through a partnership with the University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine, we have an established aquatic veterinary pathology program as well as a growing clinical partnership with the zoological medicine service. The Georgia Aquarium has a state of the art veterinary hospital with equipment comparable to that found at a teaching hospital or specialty practice.<\/p>\n

New England Aquarium<\/h2>\n

Six to eight week rotations are a comprehensive introduction into aquatic animal husbandry and veterinary medicine.<\/p>\n

Aquarium of the Pacific<\/h2>\n

The Aquarium of the Pacific offers 4 externships\/preceptorship in the veterinary services department for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students. Each position is a minimum of 3 weeks and a maximum of 6 weeks depending on the students\u2019 availability.<\/p>\n

The Marine Mammal Center<\/h2>\n

The Marine Mammal Center veterinary externship program provides veterinary students in their final\/clinical year of school the opportunity to gain exposure to marine mammal medicine and rehabilitation. Under the direct supervision of veterinary staff and volunteers, students will participate in animal husbandry, stranding response, daily clinical rounds, recordkeeping, veterinary diagnostics, surgical and anesthetic procedures, and necropsies. The student will complete a project during the externship and present the results to the staff and volunteers during the last week of their rotation.<\/p>\n

Eagle Fish Health Laboratory<\/h2>\n

Field and Laboratory experience in diagnostic and inspection services to anadromous and resident fish hatcheries of the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG).<\/p>\n

Mystic Aquarium<\/h2>\n

Mystic Aquarium and the Marine Science Magnet High School of SE CT offer a Joint Externship in Aquaculture. After learning aquaculture techniques from experienced aquarists, the extern will conduct aquaculture operations, research, and education.<\/p>\n

Rotations are a comprehensive introduction into aquaculture and common fish health concerns of freshwater reared salmonids and other finfish in a variety of types of facilities and fish culture practices.<\/p>\n
