Description

The Lost Dogs’ Home is the largest shelter in Australia. We are a non for profit organisation dedicated to providing outstanding veterinary care and welfare to stray and abandoned animals.
The Lost Dogs’ Home in North Melbourne has an opportunity for an experienced Vet to join our Shelter team.

About the role:

Are you interested in the challenge of working in a large urban animal shelter? Be rewarded with the joys of working in the animal welfare industry.

In the shelter, we provide veterinary treatment and care for thousands of lost animals as we prepare them for life with a new family. This means you will have the opportunity to perform complex workups on shelter patients, collaborate with a veterinary behaviour team, undertake surgery and have the opportunity for further education in the unique area of shelter medicine.

The North Melbourne Shelter is equipped with 2 sterile surgical tables, anaesthetic monitoring, 2 wet tables, dental machine, radiology and in house bloods.

You could also be part of our public outreach program – in 2019 our mobile desexing service has performed over 4000 surgeries, drastically reducing the reproductive capacity of urban cat populations!

We are looking for a vet with commitment towards the best care and welfare of dogs and cats. You will be supported by a fantastic and highly skilled nursing team as well as supportive colleagues and mentors.

We are seeking an experienced veterinarian who can:

  • work cooperatively in a large team to support this animal welfare initiative;
  • take on the exciting challenges of shelter work
  • be willing to participate in research and engagement activities to support the Home, its community and their animals.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing diagnostics, treatment and care to lost and abandoned animals at the North Melbourne shelter.
  • Providing medical work up, treatment and surgery to shelter animal and potentially medical consultation and surgery in the private clinic

The successful applicant will have:

  • 3+ years of experience as a veterinarian
  • Well-developed soft tissue surgical skills (orthopaedic surgery skills are a bonus and much welcomed!).
  • The ability to work cooperatively as a member of a large team including assisting at our Cranbourne shelter if needed
  • Sound emotional maturity and animal welfare ethics

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic career development and opportunities to develop skills in animal welfare and shelter medicine.
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program
  • A unique and friendly working environment (surrounded by animals!)
  • Discounted vet services and products from our Vet clinic servicing privately owned animals
  • Rewarding work with animals in need
