Description

Department of Primary Industries and Regions
Job reference: 487520
Location: 5065 - GLENSIDE
Job status: Short Term Contract
Eligibility: Open to Everyone
The Opportunity
We have an opportunity for a Senior Veterinary Officer (Special Projects) to be part of our Biosecurity Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.
PIRSA’s Animal Health program protects and facilitates market access and livestock productivity, public health and consumer confidence through the health, welfare, quality, safety and image of South Australian livestock and livestock products, and other animals.
Global trade access for livestock and livestock products increasingly requires demonstrated minimum standards of animal health and welfare. The Animal Health Group provides a system for animal disease early warning and early detection of exotic diseases; develop programmes for data collection to allow monitoring of animal health status and proof of disease freedom; and to maintain capacity for emergency animal disease management.
The Senior Veterinary Officer role contributes to delivering the agency’s priorities including increasing productivity of our livestock industries and agribusinesses, securing production through biosecurity and efficient and sustainable use of resources and maintaining market access by working with livestock industries to respond to evolving requirements of domestic and global markets and consumers.
Undertaking project management, the role contributes to the management of the risks to South Australia posed by animal pests and diseases, food borne illnesses, and misuse of rural chemicals. The Senior Veterinary Officer role within the market access subprogram specifically manages and delivers policies and projects relating to the PIRSA One Biosecurity program by providing leadership for the development, management and coordination of targeted animal health programs and oversight of development by third party vendors, staff and stakeholders.
The position will suit an individual with a strong interest in managing a number of projects and involves working with a team of animal health and biosecurity staff to provide expert advice on developing programs which future-proof data requirements for market access. Applicants seeking more information about the projects the team are working on are encouraged to contact Dr Cleopas Bamhare.
