Description

Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) provides research to underpin development of sustainable, economically viable, and environmentally and socially acceptable systems of livestock production. Research focuses on optimising health, welfare, longevity and fitness-related traits in farm animals. Our vision is to achieve innovative and sustainable development solution to the agriculture and rural sectors.

A new exciting post is available at the Animal Breeding and Genomics team within the Department of Animal and Veterinary Sciences. The successful candidate will join the team of a recently awarded BBSRC grant entitled “Aetiopathogenesis and genomic architecture of resistance to claw horn disruption lesions in dairy cattle”. The project is run at SRUC in collaboration with the Institute of Veterinary Science, University of Liverpool and the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. In this context, a substantial dataset of ca. 3,000 cattle is being created including detailed phenotypes of the animals’ foot health condition, genome-wide genotypes and whole-genome sequences.

The postholder will be based at SRUC in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, and will be responsible for jointly analysing data in order to estimate genetic parameters and identify and quantify the effect of genomic markers and regions associated with foot health. They will also design and run simulation studies to evaluate breeding strategies aiming to enhance foot health while also improving other economically important traits such as fertility, resistance to other diseases and productivity.

To be considered for this role, applicants should possess a PhD in a discipline directly related to Livestock Genomics and Breeding. Previous experience in computational and genetic/statistical analysis, computational programming and simulation design, and data handling and management is essential. The successful candidate should also possess excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills as well as a collaborative team spirit. A drive for research, publications and presentations is also essential. MSc holders in a relevant discipline with exceptional experience, ambition and drive may also be considered at a lower grade.

This post is fixed term for 20 months and will commence preferably on the 1st of December 2019.
