Description

School of Animal, Rural & Environmental Sciences
The role is based at the School of Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences at Brackenhurst campus. A rural, peaceful hub on the outskirts of the market town of Southwell, Nottinghamshire. The school is home to further education, undergraduate and postgraduate students with a friendly and environmental outlook. There is also a bustling research community including staff, PhD candidates and post doctoral researchers. With this position, there will be the opportunity for hybrid working practices whereby you may choose to work from home or on campus on certain 'office' days. However, it is worth bearing in mind that a large proportion of the workload for this position across the three years (approx. 20 months), will require you to be at zoos based within a 1 hour radius of the Brackenhurst campus to carry out data priming and data collection.
The principal purpose of this Post Doc position will be to support the research team in exploring human emotion recognition and affect transfer in non-domesticated, zoo-housed meerkats (Suricata suricatta) as part of a Leverhulme Project Grant.
About the Role
This project uses a multi-disciplinary approach to evaluate the mechanisms around human emotion recognition and affect transfer in zoo-housed meerkats. This project will be of interest for those working in psychology, biology, evolutionary theory, social communication and captive animal management fields as the ramifications from this will contribute to questions currently being asked in human-animal interaction research within each of these fields. Additionally, with increasing research into the impacts of human-animal interactions across farm, domestic, laboratory and zoo animal disciplines, understanding the fundamental principles underlying these interactions are now vital to fully appreciate the implications they may have.
This research will help us better understand the mechanisms of human-animal interactions, with implications for our evolutionary understanding of animal minds and for the successful management of zoo animals regarding the context and quality of human-animal interactions they encounter daily.
