CLIN AST PROF
Job Description:
The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, invites applications for a part-time or full-time faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor in Large Animal Medicine. The CVM is part of an academic health center with six health-related colleges and seven major health-related research centers and institutes and is allied with the academic animal science programs of the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, all housed on a single contiguous campus. The appointee will join an experienced medicine section consisting of 5 ACVIM board-certified clinicians. More than 70% of large animal after-hours emergency cases are handled by a dedicated LAS after-hours emergency clinician with backup provided by the LAM faculty member. The caseload is predominantly referral and is about 70 % equine, with the balance of cases involving small ruminants, camelids, and other production/ pet livestock. The appointee's primary teaching responsibilities will include clinical teaching of professional students and residents, as well didactic and laboratory instruction.
The large animal medicine service is based in the Alec P. and Louise H. Courtelis Equine Teaching Hospital on the main campus of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville. The hospital is fully equipped with an equine NICU, service-specific digital ultrasounds, a large, covered arena with concrete and sand/synthetic footing for in-hand and under-saddle evaluations and isolation facilities housed in a purpose-built barn. A 1.5T high-field MRI, The Steinbrenner Family C.T. Imaging Suite, nuclear scintigraphy suite, and 2 large digital radiography suites are located within the large animal hospital immediately adjacent to the medicine area. In addition, there is a podiatry suite with dedicated digital radiography, a selection of climate-controlled stalls, and over-ground endoscopy. Faculty laboratories also provide a high-speed treadmill, 3-D printing, and sterile hood for the preparation of biologic therapies. In addition to the large animal medicine faculty, there are 5 large animal DACVS, 7 DACVAA, 6 DACVR (one of which has equine diagnostic imaging designation), 4 DACT, and 3 DACVO serving the large animal hospital in addition to full laboratory support and added specialties within the small animal hospital available to consult as needed (ie. dermatology, cardiology, neurology, etc.).
The University of Florida Veterinary Hospital at the World Equestrian Center in Ocala, Florida is an added source of diagnostic and treatment modalities to equine patients in the UF system and serves as an elective and emergency surgical referral source for the Gainesville hospital. The UF at WEC hospital is focused on sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, and rehabilitation services with 3 ACVSMR faculty also holding ACVS, ECVS, and ACVIM certifications. A 40-minute drive from Gainesville, this facility expands upon the diagnostic capabilities available to our patients to include Qalibra large bore CT with standing imaging capability, Hallmarq standing MRI, and PET scan. The World Equestrian Center in Ocala is a new world-class facility with 3000 stalls and numerous indoor climate-controlled and outdoor arenas providing equestrian competition across a variety of disciplines year-round. Opportunities for faculty to hold practice days at WEC in a developed special area of expertise may exist.
Florida boasts the third largest horse population and is home to a thriving equine industry spanning all disciplines of equine activities, generating an $11.7 billion annual state economic impact. While opportunities for equestrian recreation and competition abound, Florida also offers a wide variety of entertainment and recreational activities. Gainesville is growing with abundant dining and entertainment options yet is surrounded by public lands for recreation and the wide-open countryside. A 1.5 - 2-hour drive will take you to the Gulf or Atlantic coasts and 3 major city centers with shopping, professional sports, theater, concerts, amusement parks, and fine dining. As some would say, "I'm from Florida, where we vacation in other parts of Florida!".
