About the role…

The primary remit of the Zoo Pathologist is to provide diagnostic services to the collection of animals across Taronga Conservation Society, as well as wildlife entering the Taronga Zoo Wildlife Hospital. This includes gross pathology and histopathology investigations of post-mortem and biopsy samples. The pathologist helps inform the care, welfare and biosecurity regimes for the zoo’s interesting and varied collection. The role will also work closely with and provide collaborative, mutual support to the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health.

 

Key accountabilities:

  • Undertake exotic animal and wildlife diagnostic work at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, NSW
  • Provide histopathology services and pathology support to Taronga Western Plains located in Dubbo, NSW (doesn’t usually require travel)
  • Assist with disease investigations of zoo animals and wildlife across both sites
  • Communicate diagnostic results to the veterinary team, wider zoo staff, and senior stakeholders
  • Train students, colleagues and professionals to increase capacity in wildlife care and disease investigation (including occasional weekend workshops for veterinary and wildlife professionals)
  • Work effectively as a member of a high performing team including peers, volunteers and students to assist Taronga in its achievement of strategic outcomes.

 

About you…
We are looking for candidates that have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in veterinary science and registration or eligibility for registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW
  • Post-graduate training in veterinary pathology
  • ACVP/ECVP Board Certification or equivalent preferred; Membership of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists – Veterinary Pathology also considered an asset
  • Experience in pathology relating to wildlife and exotic animals
  • Proven experience and passion for sharing knowledge, working collaboratively and building the capacity of others
