National Trust of Australia Queensland (NTAQ) is a membership-based community organisation and registered charity that works to protect, conserve, and celebrate the Environmental, Built and Cultural heritage of our State. The biggest property in the portfolio is Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and its well-known Wildlife Hospital.

Currumbin wildlife hospital is offering a unique position for an experienced and passionate wildlife research person to work with our Koala Chlamydia Vaccine Trial team.  Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is committed to the conservation, welfare and health of our koala population and our ideal candidate will have a sound background and interest in supporting and assisting our conservation and ecology outcomes.  There will be opportunities to work in other research projects within our hospital.

To be a successful in your application for this position you will demonstrate the ability to handle and track koalas, coupled with good husbandry knowledge to provide a high standard of animal care.  This role entails working in a team as well as autonomously in a fast-paced environment subject to the outdoor elements of the Australian environment based in Southeast Queensland.

The ideal applicant will offer flexibility in their working hours around a structured roster including some weekend rotational work and will be equipped with exceptional time management and organisational skills.  There is some component of administrative work involving record keeping, use of database programs and reporting field findings to our research supervisor.

We are offering 2 Part time roles based out of our hospital in Currumbin, Gold Coast Qld.   One Part time role is 16 hours per week across 2 days and the second is 24 hours over 3 days per week.

Position details

  • 2 x Part time roles ( 1 x 16hrs + 1 x 24hrs)
  • Minimum 2 years relevant industry/clinical experience
  • Relevant industry qualifications in the fields of wildlife, conservation, ecology or animal sciences
  • This role will require extensive walking, bending, lifting, and carrying, in an outdoor environment, in all weathers.
  • Must be fully vaccinated to comply with the QLD government vaccine mandate and other vaccines relative to WHS for this work environment
  • Demonstrated experience
  • Open driver’s license

 

Desirable

  • Sound IT skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office use
  • Competent use of Access database
  • Current First Aid Certificate

 

Selection Criteria both roles:

  1. Must have relevant industry qualifications in the fields of wildlife, conservation, ecology or animal sciences
  2. Able to demonstrate a sound understanding of operational aspects of conservation research
  3. Must be an approachable team player and team leader who can demonstrate a highly flexible, positive attitude – calm, and level-headed with the ability to trouble shoot as required for the role.
  4. Has very high level of time management and organisational skills with a genuine ability to multitask.
  5. Professional approach to duties, high standard of personal presentation and an excellent role model.
  6. Must have very capable computer skills and strong work allocation and time management skills.
  7. Can liaise and communicate in a friendly and effective manner with all key contacts including internal department staff, volunteers, external local community groups and associated veterinary contacts
  8. A knowledge, interest and understanding of the key elements of Currumbin Sanctuary Wildlife Hospital and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is essential.
