ABOUT US

At Friends of the Koala, we believe in a future for koalas in the NSW Northern Rivers. Our organisation has been operating for almost 40 years, and we have an established history of working towards positive outcomes for koalas in a region that is home to one of the last significant, genetically diverse koala populations in Australia.

Friends of the Koala's Northern Rivers Koala Hospital is the only dedicated koala hospital in the region, which is licensed through the veterinary board of NSW. We are equipped with an anaesthetic machine, drip pumps, ultrasound, digital x-ray and are in the process of upgrading our Koala Hospital and Koala Rehabilitation Centre, including the purchase of more equipment.

We are licensed through NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to rescue, rehabilitate, and release sick and injured koalas. With the support of over 300 active volunteers, we tend to approximately 350 sick, injured, and orphaned koalas each year. That's over a third of all wild koalas rescued in NSW and more than any other koala hospital on the East Coast of Australia. We are the only wildlife hospital in New South Wales licensed to vaccinate koalas against Chlamydia, the number one cause of death in our region. Our on-site Rehabilitation Centre can house up to 30 koalas at one time.

Our Community Education and Administration Centre is our operational hub for community engagement and advocacy activity. Through our Community Nursery, we issue koala food trees and other rainforest species to private landholders and tree planting groups. We also work with landowners to preserve and extend known koala habitat through targeted Habitat Restoration Projects.

If you believe in a future for this iconic species, we would love your support to ensure that Northern Rivers koalas can continue to thrive in the years ahead.
