RSPCA NT is an incorporated association in the NT and is a member of RSPCA Australia. Despite being the smallest RSPCA society, RSPCA NT achieves leading successful outcomes and has strong community support.
The role
The Veterinary Surgeon is primarily focused on providing veterinary care to animals in the RSPCA NT shelter. This includes health checks, assessments (behavioural and clinical), desexing, corrective surgeries, dental treatments, medication, consultations for adopted animals and everything that goes with a small veterinary practice. The role also supports broader community programs, including community de-sexing programs and microchipping.
The role includes:
- Working closely with the rest of the RSPCA NT team including Vet Nurse and Shelter Supervisor to plan the clinic activities and treatment schedules.
- Performing surgeries including de-sexing, corrective soft tissue and limited orthopedic surgery
- Performing remedial dental treatments
- Providing advice and consultation services for adopted animals
- Providing veterinary advice and guidance to the shelter team and foster carers.
- Assisting with the management of day-to-day clinic functions.
- Contributing to the ongoing capability development of the vet team.
Your experience
Ideally you will have:
- At least 4 years’ experience working in a veterinary clinic undertaking consultations and surgery.
- Confidence in performing soft tissue surgeries and dental treatments while being the only vet on the premises.
- Sound diagnostic skills including the ability to effectively collaborate with others on difficult cases.
- A proven record in effectively navigating sensitive cases.
- Demonstrated experience in dealing with complex medical issues.
- The ability to work as a member of a small vet team, including navigating competing demands.
Your key attributes
Building relationships - Build constructive working relationships and demonstrate a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect.
Self-driven - Proactive, with the ability to deliver operational priorities.
Flexible – Adaptable to changing operational needs, with resilience to navigate a sometimes challenging environment.
Willing to get your hands dirty – Be willing to get involved on the ground to support shelter operations and contribute as a part of the broader RSPCA NT team.
