Description

Reporting to the Head of Veterinary Services for RZSS, you will perform all duties to ensure the smooth running of all veterinary activities at the Highland Wildlife Park. Following best practice guidance, you’ll be providing the highest standard of veterinary care and animal welfare in support of RZSS’ Vision and mission, aiming to optimise the quality of the visitor experience as appropriate.

 

Some of the things you’ll do:

  • Ensure the highest level of veterinary care, animal welfare, and disease control taking into account relevant legislation and best practice animal management.
  • Develop and contribute to best practice guidance, veterinary reports, protocols and working procedures relevant to animal welfare and pre-release management.
  • Collate, record and analyse veterinary care data (ZIMS records, biological samples, CCTV footage, diet etc) and use to provide effective guidance / recommendations to support best practice animal husbandry and pre-release management
  • Contribute to training programmes (e.g. monitoring, data collection) and post release monitoring activities (e.g. Scottish Wildcats).
  • Responsible for participating in a 24/7, 365-day emergency on-call provision for animals held by the RZSS.
  • Engage with and support visitors, ensuring your message is consistent with team/project objectives and in line with RZSS’s mission and vision whilst providing first-class customer care and service, e.g. answering visitor queries and undertaking public talks, tours and Keeper for the Day experiences as requested.

 

What we’re looking for:

  • A current Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management)
  • Significant practical experience in a zoo or animal-related environment
  • A practical understanding of current conservation science, zoo biology and animal welfare ethics
  • Up-to-date knowledge of current veterinary zoological techniques and best practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of zoological legislation and best practice
  • Working knowledge of ZIMS
  • Confident presentations skills, e.g. about animals, veterinary care and welfare
