Purpose

Work independently under the direction of the Staff Veterinarian by directing daily veterinary technical support, surgical facility management operations, and animal health and welfare activities.  Provide direction and guidance to veterinary technicians to ensure successful achievement of the BRC’s mission in alignment with the BRC’s vision and values and in a manner consistent with established policies and regulations.

 

Primary Functions

•   Direct and perform daily veterinary program activities, surgical facility support operations, and animal health and welfare activities to ensure performance is consistent with established policies and procedures (SOP’s).

•   Responsible for supervision of the veterinary technical staff including recruitment, hiring, orientation, training and development and performance evaluation.  Mentor and direct veterinary technical staff to achieve division goals.

•   Cooperate, coordinate and communicate with internal and external entities by using appropriate methods to comply with policies and regulations and ensure efficient facility operations.  Act as a resource for investigators and support staff and comply with all aspects of the animal care and use program.

•   Oversee surgical suite and other designated veterinary program locations and maintain appropriate inventory of veterinary supplies.

•   Direct the scheduling of veterinary research support services, monitoring of the surgical suite environment, inventories, surgical related waste disposal, maintenance of USDA-regulated species, and submission of charges for BRC veterinary technical and surgical support.

•   Train veterinary technicians to perform animal husbandry related functions, technical procedures and animal health and welfare activities to ensure that they are performed in a manner that is consistent with established policies and regulations.

•   Under the direction of the BRC Training Specialist, facilitate technical training for investigative staff and provide staff for designated workshops.

•   Assist in collection and dissemination of data for managerial reports regarding facility utilization, staff labor allocation, and any other reports as may be required.

•   Ensure compliance with regulatory and institutional policies.

•   Participate on appropriate committees relevant to the advancement of the program and the profession.

•   Participate in the development and implementation of division policies, procedures and organizational tools to ensure compliance with MCW, state and federal standards.

•   Assist in the development and management of relevant budget activities.

•   Participate in BRC Quality Assurance activities. Implement and conduct quality assurance processes to ensure the highest standards.

•   Utilize quality improvement tools facilitate improvement of systems & processes.

•   Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Preferred Schedule:
Full-time role with expectations for coverage during core business hours and flexibility required as necessary to accommodate business needs

 

Position Requirements:

Specifications

Appropriate experience may be substituted for education on an equivalent basis

Minimum Required Education:  Associate Degree from an AVMA recognized program in a life science or related applied science (e.g, veterinary technology) required.

Minimum Required Experience: 5 years

Preferred Education:  Graduate of accredited veterinary technician program

Preferred Experience:  Laboratory animal or related facility.  Experience should include progressive responsibility and work in a designated leadership capacity.  Two years supervisory experience strongly preferred.

Certification: Certified Veterinary Technician required.  Certified Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) by American Association for Laboratory Animal Science at time of hire preferred, required within 1 year of hire.  Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification preferred.
