The University of Virginia’s Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) is seeking a Veterinary Resident. This position works closely with the Center’s veterinary team to support ongoing animal research on Grounds. The resident will participate in the UVA laboratory animal medicine residency which is a three-year program designed to prepare the incumbent for a productive career in laboratory animal medicine and to partially fulfill the requirements for board eligibility of the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM). This position reports to the CCM Director and Attending Veterinarian

The mission of the Center for Comparative Medicine is to support biomedical research and teaching that utilizes laboratory animals. The Center does this in a manner which promotes the policies set by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC) whose charge is to oversee compliance by personnel at the University of Virginia with federal regulations and guidelines.

 

Duties include:

  • Participation in preventative, clinical medicine, and surgery of laboratory animals on Grounds.
  • Participation in laboratory animal biosafety and biosecurity programs, including the acquisition, quarantine, and disposition of research animals.
  • Providing guidance to research personnel on animal model and protocol development as well as execute and follow-up on technical research projects.
  • Contribution to the management and professional development of the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM) staff.
  • Assists with the development, review, revision, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s).
  • Assures compliance with the USDA, PHS policies and AAALAC regulations and standards.
  • Participates on the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, include the review of protocols.
  • Participates in the veterinary on-call rotation.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as required.
  • Participates in teaching and academic responsibilities for visiting trainees and students.

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree is required from an AVMA-accredited veterinary school (or the candidate must have completed a Program for the Assessment of Veterinary Education Equivalence (PAVE) or Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates requirements (ECFVG).
  • Experience: minimum 1 year of veterinary related experience
  • Licensure/Certifications: completion of the Veterinary National Board Exam (or equivalent) with the ability to obtain a state of Commonwealth of Virginia veterinary license within 12 months of employment
  • Vaccination: This position requires compliance with UVA Health Policy OCH-002.

 

Salary and Position Term:

  • Status: Full time exempt position with full UVA benefits
  • Salary Range: $90,000-$100,000 (year-1-$90,000/ year-2-$95,000/ year-3-$100,000)
  • Fringe benefits included: yes
  • Term: 3 years
  • Anticipated Start Date: Summer 2024

Physical Demands: Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently traveling/bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 20 - 50lbs. May be exposed to chemicals, blood/body fluids and infectious disease.
