To provide effective and safe day-to-day technical management of the radiotherapy facility within the Small Animal Hospital at Glasgow University Veterinary School, operating the linear accelerator (Varian Vital Beam) and Aria computer system; producing treatment immobilisation devices and assisting in radiotherapy treatment planning using Eclipse software. To assist with the development and updating of protocols and procedures in radiation therapy and to instruct other members of the team in their usage.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 

1. To assist in the day to day running and management of a veterinary radiotherapy facility, in liaison with the Oncology Service clinicians, treating pet dogs and cats which will maintain a clinical workload necessary to support teaching and research activities.
2. To contribute to service improvement for the veterinary radiotherapy facility, liaising with managers/consultants/clinicians from other disciplines to meet the changing needs of the unit and exploit opportunities to enhance income generation capability of the service.
3. To actively seek to further advance own knowledge within the profession, to keep abreast of current changes in practice and techniques, disseminating information from clinical training courses as required.
4. To perform radiation treatments according to the specified protocols, as directed by the attending oncologist, and ensure that these are carried out to the highest standard of care, assisting with the development and updating of protocols and procedures as required and in liaison with the oncology staff.
5. To assist in CT/MRI imaging examinations, in particular production, and fitting of immobilization devices.
6. To train in / deliver methods of complex treatment planning and calculations to contribute to treatment planning in collaboration with oncology clinicians.
7. Responsible for ensuring that patient record keeping, image processing, data transfer and archiving are performed in a timely fashion and kept rigorously accurate and up to date.
8. To ensure the unit complies with all the appropriate Ionising Radiation and Health and Safety legislation to provide a safe working environment for all staff and veterinary patients and to act as Radiation Protection Supervisor.
9. To maintain optimum performance of the equipment by implementation of a quality control and safety testing programme and co-ordinating servicing.
10. Using detailed specialist knowledge to instruct, train and provide guidance to colleagues where necessary.

 

For appointment at Grade 7 

1. Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility.
2. Take a leading role in the planning, management and organisation of the radiotherapy service to ensure effective and efficient service delivery.

 

Knowledge/Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Essential:

A1 Diploma of the College of Radiographers or BSc in therapy radiography (or equivalent)

A2 State registration with Health Professions Council

A3 Knowledge of radiation safety and Ionising Regulations (Medical Exposure) regulations

A4 Willingness to acquire experience of treatment planning techniques and further qualifications through appropriate study

A5 Understanding and competency of IT applications/packages

 

Desirable:

B1 Specialised knowledge of relevant complex techniques such as IMRT, stereotaxy

 

Skills 

 

Essential:

C1 Excellent communication skills, interpersonal and time management skills

C2 Able to work to a very high standard within a multidisciplinary team

C3 Highly motivated, able to demonstrate good technical knowledge and desire to continue to develop it

Experience 

 

Essential:

E1 Previous relevant experience For appointment at Grade 7

E2 Substantial post-qualification experience of therapeutic radiography

 

Desirable:

F1 Experience of small animals (dogs and cats) or veterinary work

F2 Appreciation of academic clinical environment

F3 Experience of Varian radiotherapy equipment and Aria software

 

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum pro rata.

 

This post is part-time (14 hours per week), and open ended.
