About the opportunity

  • Develop state and national animal biosecurity policies and strategies in support and protection of WA’s livestock industries.

This is an exciting opportunity for Veterinary Officers to join our Animal Biosecurity and Welfare team and be involved in developing and influencing Western Australian and national animal biosecurity strategies, policies, and plans. This process will be used to fill multiple Veterinary Officer (Policy) positions in the Department’s’ Animal Biosecurity and Welfare branch.

We currently have two (2) permanent full-time positions at Specified Calling Level 2 and three (3) 12-month fixed-term positions at Specified Calling Level 2 & 3 available for immediate filling.

These roles provide an opportunity to be involved in animal biosecurity and welfare policy, emergency animal disease preparedness and disease surveillance and control. You will work closely with a team of Departmental Veterinary Policy Officers and the livestock industry to develop and influence Western Australian and national animal biosecurity and welfare strategies, policies and plans.

We are looking for individuals with:

  • a detailed knowledge and understanding of state and national livestock sectors and associated industries;
  • the ability to apply their knowledge and understanding in the areas of animal disease emergency management, animal health surveillance and control programs, or national and state policy and planning; and
  • an interest in developing their skills in the research, planning, coordination and implementation of animal health and biosecurity policies and surveillance activities.

For Specified Calling Level 3 please address the following:

  • Work related requirement 1 – Role Specific: Demonstrated ability to design, develop and coordinate strategic animal health and/or welfare policy initiatives across the Department and the whole government.
  • Work related requirement 3 – Build Effective Relationships: Strong verbal, writing and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to confidently liaise, collaborate with and communicate scientific information to departmental staff, industry, and the community.
  • Work related requirement 5 - Think strategically: Well developed research, conceptual and analytical skills including the ability to identify, research, resolve and advise on animal health and/or animal welfare issues.

To be eligible for a permanent appointment to the Western Australian public sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia.
