Veterinary Officer Policy - Multiple Vacancies
Specified Calling Level 2-3 | Fixed Term – Part Time, Permanent - Full Time, Fixed Term - Part Time, Fixed Term - Full Time
- Supporting and protecting the WA livestock and aquatic industries by providing advice and contributing to strategic animal health objectives
- Working to strengthen surveillance and preparedness for emergency animal diseases
What will your typical day look like?
This is an exciting opportunity for Veterinary Officers to join our Animal Biosecurity and Welfare team and be involved in developing and influencing Western Australian and national animal biosecurity strategies, policies and plans.
This process will be used to fill multiple Veterinary Officer (Policy) positions in DPIRD’s Animal Biosecurity and Welfare branch. The different positions are outlined below.
Aquatic animal health position (Position 70210274)
The Veterinary Officer (Policy) position in aquatic animal health provides an opportunity to be involved in policy areas of aquatic animal disease surveillance and emergency disease preparedness and biosecurity, supporting aquatic animal health in Western Australia.
Key responsibilities of the aquatic animal health role include:
- Developing and coordinating aquatic animal disease surveillance initiatives including early detection of aquatic emergency animal diseases.
- Assessment of biosecurity (disease) risks associated with aquatic animal movements and development of health policies and protocols
- Development and delivery of initiatives to boost aquaculture enterprise biosecurity and aquatic emergency animal disease preparedness.
This will involve working collaboratively in a team of aquatic veterinary and policy officers, as well as across government, the aquaculture and fisheries sectors and with other aquatic animal health stakeholders.
Specialised technical knowledge in the areas of aquatic animal health and biosecurity will be an advantage in the selection process for this position.
Terrestrial animal biosecurity positions (Positions 70191317 and 70191319)
The Veterinary Officer (Policy) role in terrestrial animal biosecurity provides an opportunity to be involved in animal biosecurity policy and legislation, emergency animal disease preparedness and response, animal product integrity and disease surveillance and control.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Supporting preparedness and responses to emergency animal disease and residue incidents of consequence to the agricultural sector, economy and human health.
- Provides advice on provisions of various Acts, regulations and guidelines for animal biosecurity and providing technical and high-level animal biosecurity advice on relevant policy issues.
- Prepare scientifically based advice of the disease and residue status of Western Australia’s livestock and aquatic sector.
- Contribute animal biosecurity input into national and state One Health policies
- Develops and maintains effective working relationships with stakeholders, industry groups and other agencies and organisations whilst developing national and state animal biosecurity strategies, policies and plans.

As the ideal candidate, you will have the ability to analyse biosecurity information to provide strategic, evidence based advice to support the Chief Veterinary Officer in matters related to animal biosecurity that might impact WA.
The successful candidates will develop strong working relationships to establish an understanding of Australia’s animal health and welfare framework to support the Departments role in protecting the biosecurity of the WA livestock and aquatic industries.
In addition to this you will demonstrate a genuine commitment to DPIRD’s values and have the ability to provide policy support and advice on the matters relating to animal biosecurity and welfare, product integrity, emergency animal disease preparedness, and animal disease surveillance and control.
Specified Calling Level 2: At an experienced professional level, under general guidance and using independent judgement, contributes to the enhancement and support of the state and national biosecurity status; access to markets; and the maintenance of social licence for the WA livestock industries.
Specified Calling Level 3: At a broadly recognised professional level and under limited direction, demonstrating considerable initiative and independent judgement, contributes to the enhancement and support of the state and national biosecurity status; access to markets; and the maintenance of social licence for the WA livestock industries.

Specified Calling Level 3
- Work Related Requirement 1 – Role Specific: Demonstrated ability to design, develop and coordinate strategic animal health and/or welfare policy initiatives across the Department and the whole of government.
- Work Related Requirement 2 – Role Specific: Experience enforcing and providing advice on relevant Acts, regulations, policies and guidelines in the areas of biosecurity and welfare.
- Work Related Requirement 3 – Build effective relationships: Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to confidently liaise, collaborate with and communicate scientific information to departmental staff, industry and the community.
- Work Related Requirement 4 - Challenge for innovation: Well developed abilities to establish clear plans and timeframes, evaluate performance, identify the need for change, determine action and see tasks and projects through to completion.
- Work Related Requirement 5 – Think strategically: Well developed research, conceptual and analytical skills including the ability to identify, research, resolve and advise on animal health and/or animal welfare issues.

- A degree in Veterinary Science (obtained from an Australian university or recognised equivalent), and current recognised registration (or able to obtain prior to commencement) with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Western Australia – registration must be maintained whilst employed by the department.
- A current and valid Western Australian C (car) class driver's licence, or equivalent is required (if not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement at applicant's expense).
- Occasional travel to and from metropolitan and regional offices may be required.
- The contract of employment specifies terms and conditions relating to this position.
