Description
Veterinary Officer (Epidemiology) Pool
Specified Calling Level 2 - 4 | Pool Ref AV8535
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) leads the sustainable development of Western Australia’s (WA) regions and agriculture, aquaculture, food and fisheries sectors. In everything we do, we take an approach to protect, grow and innovate WA’s economy, community and environment.
About the opportunity
The Animal Biosecurity and Welfare team works to maintain and enhance WA's livestock and aquatic industries. The Veterinary Epidemiologist will be involved in providing epidemiological support and advice to the Chief Veterinary Officer and Deputy Chief Veterinary Officers across all biosecurity areas of prevention, preparedness and response. This will include working in areas including but not limited to animal welfare, animal health surveillance, disease control, emergency animal preparedness and response, inter-state and intra-state biosecurity conditions, product integrity and livestock identification and movement.
The successful applicant will be part of an Epidemiological team led by a Senior Veterinary Epidemiologist and contribute to national and state epidemiological projects or issues relevant to WA’s animal health and biosecurity. This will involve data collation, analysis for biosecurity intelligence and trend analysis, designing of surveillance plans, investigation of disease outbreaks, providing technical input into biosecurity programs, policies, plans and procedures, modelling, risk analysis, and the review and development of biosecurity databases and information systems.
This is your opportunity to apply your knowledge and undertake complex and timely risk assessments, contributing to policy development and reform. This work will underpin biosecurity and livestock industry programs to innovate and implement surveillance, disease control and biosecurity programs of state and national significance.
There are currently three (3) permanent positions available for immediate filling in Specified Calling Levels 2 to 4. The SCL4 is a Senior Veterinary Epidemiologist and will have a leadership role in the Department and of the epidemiology team.
We are looking for individuals with:
- A degree in Veterinary Science (obtained from an Australian university or recognised equivalent), and currently recognised registration (or able to obtain prior to commencement) with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of WA – registration must be maintained whilst employed by the department.
- Knowledge and experience in epidemiology. For Veterinary Epidemiology positions at Specified Calling level 3 and 4, Post-Graduate qualifications or Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists memberships in epidemiology or public health are highly desirable.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to apply conceptual, analytical and problem skills to provide risk based analysis of biosecurity issues.
