About This Opportunity
The Veterinary Officer is a leadership position within Research Ethics and Integrity that supports the University’s animal ethics framework and processes. The position provides veterinary and technical advice to the University’s Animal Ethics Committees (AECs), animal ethics administrators and individuals involved in the care and use of animals for research and teaching.
The Veterinary Officer also develops processes, resources and training to promote best practice in the scientific use of animals and to ensure the University continues to meet its obligations under relevant legislation, codes and guidelines.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Provide accurate scientific, technical and operational advice to the University’s AECs and animal ethics team.
- Support the University research and teaching community through the development of resources and provision of advice related to animal care and use.
- Coordinate and conduct regular audits of UQ animal facilities (including facilities jointly managed with external AECs) to ensure compliance with relevant policies, procedures and codes of practice.
- Develop and implement mechanisms to ensure appropriate oversight and monitoring of approved animal research and teaching activities at UQ.
- Provide advice on adverse events and welfare concerns related to approved animal research and teaching activities.
- Support development and implementation of policy and/or procedural changes to ensure the ongoing suitability and currency of the University’s animal ethics framework and processes.
- In consultation with the Senior Manager, Animal Ethics, design and deliver training to promote the responsible and ethical use of animals for scientific purposes, including specific promotion and integration of the 3Rs – refinement, replacement and reduction.
About You
Essential
- A tertiary degree in Veterinary Science, or equivalent academic qualifications that meet the requirements for registration as a Veterinarian in Queensland, and extensive relevant experience. Experience working in a complex regulatory environment will be highly regarded.
- Knowledge, or the demonstrated ability to rapidly gain such knowledge, of the regulatory frameworks related to the scientific use of animals in Australia.
- Demonstrated high level communication, negotiation and influencing skills in dealing with a range of individuals and groups.
- Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to produce professional reports, briefings and correspondence.
Highly Desirable
- Experience using animals for research and/or knowledge and experience of compliance matters relating to the care and use of animals in a research environment.
- Experience with an Animal Ethics Committee.
Special requirements
- Unrestricted driver’s licence to travel between campuses and attend facilities when required.
What We Can Offer
This is a full-time, continuing/permanent position through at HEW Level 9.
The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $123,496 - $130,685 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $144,491 - $152,902 per annum.
