Are you passionate about wildlife and keen to apply your skills in an innovative and ever-changing environment? With the launch of our brand-new wildlife hospital in December 2022, we are expanding our wildlife health team to meet the growing health needs of our local wildlife, zoo population and conservation breeding programs.  We are looking for an experienced and motivated Veterinary Officer who is interested in joining a dynamic, multi-disciplinary veterinary team in a leading organisation in conservation and animal management.

About the role....

You will be working with an experienced wildlife health team at a new purpose-built wildlife hospital located at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Our open-range zoo features spacious animal exhibits, immersive experiences for zoo visitors and a 110-hectare predator-proof sanctuary which hosts several ex-situ conservation breeding programs.

Taronga is committed to conservation - creating a direct and positive connection between wildlife and people.  This role is integral to our continued ability to provide the highest standards of animal care. The veterinary team’s responsibilities include the maintenance of the health and welfare of Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s animal population, treatment of wildlife brought into the zoo’s native wildlife clinic and consultancies to other institutions and agencies. Veterinarians also participate in under-graduate and post graduate veterinary and zoological education and training.

Some key features of this role:

  • Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s animal population is hoof-stock focused (elephants, three species of rhinoceros, giraffe, wild equids, antelope, and deer). A significant proportion of the caseload involves ungulate field procedures and herd health management.
  • Our Wildlife Hospital provides a free veterinary service for sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife, treating over 700 native animals each year. This role involves wildlife triage, treatment and rehabilitation including consultations with wildlife carers.
  • This role provides veterinary support for Taronga’s ex-situ conservation breeding programs. Opportunities for fieldwork may be available periodically.
  • Our new hospital showcases veterinary work to zoo visitors, with animal treatment rooms, surgical facilities and laboratories on display. Delivering guest experience and education is embedded in Wildlife Hospital operations and is an integral part of the daily requirements of this role.
  • The Wildlife Health team are supported remotely by Taronga’s in house wildlife pathologist and nutritionist (based at Taronga Zoo, Sydney), and a network of veterinary specialists for assistance with complex cases.

 About you....

You will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Veterinary Science and registration or eligibility for registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of NSW
  • Minimum 2 years full-time clinical experience in a zoo, wildlife hospital or similar environment
  • Experience working with hoof stock, or a demonstrated interest in acquiring large animal clinical skills.
  • Current NSW Drivers Licence or ability to acquire
  • Current NSW Tranquilliser Permit or ability to acquire
  • Vaccinations against Zoonotic diseases (in accordance with Taronga’s Zoonotic disease vaccination Matrix).
