About the role..

Deliver high quality nursing and husbandry care to the animals in Taronga’s collection, as well as injured and rehabilitating wildlife. The nurses here are part of a collaborative team who are highly involved in projects, data management, transactions, designing our new state-of-the-art hospital building, and many more exciting tasks that aren’t solely clinical in nature.

Staff in our wildlife hospital are also expected to be involved in educational, promotional and engagement activities for the work done by Taronga Zoo, such as media opportunities, VIP tours and visitor experience.

 

Key accountabilities…

  • Provide quality care to animals from within the zoo collection, including preventative and routine health and husbandry, as well as responding to injuries and illnesses as they arise
  • Provide compassionate, pragmatic care and rehabilitation to wildlife presented by members of the public, including but not limited to admissions, communications with carers, coordinating rehabilitation programmes and releases
  • Manage the data, reporting and record keeping associated with animal care, transactions and ensure Taronga is compliant with all relevant legislation and guidelines regarding the care of captive animals
  • Be involved in projects to maintain or improve specific elements of the Wildlife Health department and Taronga Conservation Society’s goals and strategic objectives
  • Involvement in educational and visitor experience activities such as media, tours and talks
  • Work under supervision and with a team to safely provide high quality animal husbandry and management in line with Taronga policies and procedures.
  • Participate in non-routine health and husbandry activities such as animal transports, animal introductions/breeding, restraint and treatment of animals in care.
  • Comply with Taronga’s WHS polices and Safe Work Procedures and work collaboratively to achieve a positive health and wellbeing culture ;
  • Participate in behavioural husbandry (training and enrichment) programmes to ensure optimal animal welfare.
  • Initiate engagement and interaction with guests to support Taronga’s vision, this includes the delivery of educational Keeper talks that inspire our guests to change their behaviour for a positive future.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers and students across a variety of portfolios to support Taronga’s strategic goals.
  • Actively support Taronga’s commitment to achieving the UN’s Sustainability Development Goals.
  • Undertake minor or routine maintenance on exhibit enclosures and report maintenance requirements and safety issues as appropriate

 

About you..

We are looking for candidates that have/ are willing to:

  • Certificate IV in veterinary nursing or equivalent with at least 2 years’ experience caring for a range of Native wildlife species
  • Proactive, positive outlook with strong history of taking the initiative and finding solutions to issues
  • Exceptional ability to balance difficult, sometimes competing priorities in a complex, busy and extremely varied workplace
  • NSW C Class Drivers Licence (or ability to transfer current unrestricted licence)
  • TB screening and vaccinations against Zoonotic disease (in accordance with Taronga's Zoonotic disease vaccination matrix)
  • Obtain and maintain a current paid NSW Working with Children Check at own expense.
