About the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences
The Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences is a leader in agricultural, food and veterinary science education and research in Australia. The faculty comprises the Melbourne Veterinary School and the School of Agriculture and Food. The faculty operates across three campuses: Parkville, Werribee and Dookie. We acknowledge and pay respect to the traditional owners of the lands upon which these campuses are situated, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung peoples and the Yorta Yorta Nation. In addition to education and research, the faculty operates a veterinary hospital at Werribee, a broadacre farm at Dookie, and an equine hospital in Shepparton.
About the Role
The Veterinary Nurse (ELIC) supports the operation and provision of service within the Equine Lameness and Imaging Centre, located on the Werribee campus of the University of Melbourne. The position will be part of a team delivering equine clinical and research imaging, lameness investigation and elective surgery. The primary focus of the Veterinary Nurse (ELIC) will be to support the delivery of high-level lameness and imaging services, patient care and efficient nursing assistance to veterinarians and researchers, ensuring all tasks are performed in a timely and proficient manner.
In a typical week at work, you may:
- Provide veterinary nursing support to assist in the delivery of high-level lameness and imaging services, patient care and efficient nursing assistance to veterinarians and researchers in a timely manner in accordance with best practice
- Assist with imaging activities under the direction of imaging technicians and veterinarians within the Equine Lameness and Imaging Centre in accordance with radiation and operational safety protocols
- Contribute to effective communications with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the provision of the highest standard of customer service at all times
- Actively participate in service meetings and their outcomes
- Proactively identify and recommend service improvements
- Maintain a sound knowledge of current University Policy and Procedures, and reliably follow these or provide compliant advice to others
About You
You will have excellent written communication skills that enable the consistent and timely preparation of patient notes, correspondence, and tasks to a high-standard with demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and have the skills and experience in assisting veterinarians with a range of clinical procedures in accordance with relevant policies and standard operating procedures. You will have the ability to take initiative and work flexibly in a changing environment with capacity to learn new skills and take on new tasks as required and the ability to work independently and under general direction within a busy environment as part of a team. You will have the proven ability to work under general direction within established policies and Standard Operating Procedures in a busy environment.
Ideally, you will further have:
- Completion of a relevant Certificate III, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training
- Proven veterinary nursing experience working with equine patients gained in the veterinary industry
- Proven animal handling skills in a veterinary clinical environment, and in particular horse-handling skills and experience gained within the equine industry
- Established organisational skills demonstrated by the ability to meet deadlines and effectively balance competing demands with appropriate problem-solving initiative in a professional manner
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to liaise professionally across all levels with internal and external stakeholders, and with a diverse range of people
