Position Overview

The Veterinary Career Development Program (VCD) is integral to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree program. The academic, teaching VCD, will review and deliver the curriculum and materials for professional and career development strategies to ensure veterinary day one competences are met. Other professional skills that employers seek is also to be emphasised in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching to veterinary students.

The ability to develop and conduct professional development workshops for students and staff in the area of student capacity building, resilience and transition is desired.

 

Principal Accountabilities

1. Deliver the Veterinary Career Development Program (VCD) to undergraduate veterinary students.

2. Assist the first-year experience coordinator in the development of home groups and a mentoring program, as well as monitor and when appropriate, act on student enrolment, progress, retention, and achievement data and support scholarly investigations on participation rates.

3. Identification and development of the VCD curriculum and other materials to meet AVBC Day One Competences and the development of relevant new teaching initiatives for

undergraduate, post-graduate, staff and veterinary professionals and perform administrative functions relating to subject delivery.

4. Delivery of training on professional and career development strategies to enable students to gain the defined AVBC Veterinary Science Day One competencies which are the additional professional competencies that employers seek in undergraduate and postgraduate students, including setting up and marking assessments and the VCD program evaluation activities.

5. Establish an active scholarship of teaching research program within the field of developing professional and career development strategies in undergraduate, postgraduate students and professionals which may include supervising higher degree by research students in these and related fields to build leadership/ research workforce in the fields.

6. Maintain professional competency and skills through active participation in professional development.

7. Attend departmental/university meetings and play a role in planning or committee work within the Discipline/University to deliver the Discipline, College, and University strategic and operation plan outcomes, especially in areas of teaching and learning, continuing education and continuing professional development committees. 8. Support the University's commitment to the principles of reconciliation, which exemplify respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage and the valuing of justice and equity for all Australians.

9. Demonstrate a commitment to the University's values.

10. Support the principles of the TropEco program and engage in commitment to JCU sustainability goals and objectives.

 

Generic Accountabilities

There are generic responsibilities that apply to all James Cook University staff.

1. The VCD Academic is required to observe the lawful and reasonable directions, policies, and decisions of the University Council, understand, and comply with the Enterprise Agreement, the Statutes and Rules of the University, the policies and decisions of the University Council and other appropriate University authorities, as in force from time to time.

2. The VCD Academic is required to demonstrate a personal commitment to ensure personal safety and the safety of others and contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance. This includes the effective implementation and compliance with James Cook University WHS policies, procedures and safe systems of work, together with all relevant legislation, duties and obligations. Contribute to the continuous improvement of our WHS performance.

3. The VCD Academic is required to exercise proper discretion in all matters affecting the well-being of the University which involve public writing or speaking in accordance with the University’s Code of Conduct.

Selection Criteria

Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.

 

Essential

1. Demonstrated understanding of learning and transition pedagogies for higher education and their relevance to widening participation in higher education.

2. Demonstrated ability and experience in planning, creating, mapping, and delivering an embedded and scaffolded career development program with the most current industry standards for academic achievement and undergraduate preparedness for the Veterinary Science profession.

3. Experience in curriculum development and assessment, including the development of multimedia teaching activities and materials for a range of delivery modes, including intensive, short course, online and face-to-face delivery.

4. Demonstrated high-level communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills to support student interactions and liaise effectively and engage with relevant academic, health, community and professional groups and other stakeholders and foster external relationships and communications with professional bodies and potential students and other stakeholders.

 

Desirable

1. Experience working/teaching in higher education settings in Australia or similar university environments.

2. Demonstrated ability to secure and manage research funds, and to undertake academic research in fields related to this academic field as evidenced by track record (peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations) or demonstrated capacity to perform.
