Description

The Veterinary Services team is key in upholding the integrity of the industry through ensuring transparent and fair conduct of racing and protecting animal welfare.

Your proven ability to balance competing priorities together with your collaborative, engaging, and influencing way of working will ensure sustainable growth of the industry.

In this position you will ensure all animals are fit to compete at the race meetings and appropriately cared for, along with while working with the Integrity Operations team in conducting visits to assess animal welfare concerns.

Position responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Assist in identifying welfare or integrity risks and determining mitigation strategies and actions.
  • Provide on the job coaching in welfare and integrity matters to operational teams.
  • Actively contribute to the ongoing initiatives across the Integrity function, including the review and implementation of standards, policies, and work methods.
  • Attend to incidents involving injury promptly to minimise any discomfort.
  • Complete relevant activities as required by the race meeting Chair, including taking samples/swabs.
  • Assist Investigative Stewards and race day panel Stewards in preparing reports and presenting evidence to Stewards’ Inquiries, VRT hearings, VCAT appeals, and other courts or regulatory bodies.
  • Contribute to the development and delivery of educational materials for employees and industry participants.
  • Provide emergency care when required.
  • Attend race meetings as rostered - the role requires flexible working with a combination of day, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts determined by the race meeting schedule. 

 

Skills and Attributes:

  • Minimum 3 + years of experience in veterinary practice.
  • Degree in Veterinary Science (or equivalent).
  • Guide application of rules and regulations in challenging circumstances.
  • Maintain professional independence under pressure.
  • Contemporary knowledge of animal welfare matters.
  • Knowledge of animal swabbing and prohibited substance detection (desirable).
  • Registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria (or eligibility).
  • Confidence to make and/or support and implement decisions even when it may be unpopular.
  • The ability to travel intrastate with overnight stays.
