Description

Veterinarian - Foster Care Program  (Part time 42 hours per fortnight)

We are looking for a Veterinarian to join our Shelter team to support our growing foster care program.

About us:

The Lost Dogs' Home (LDH) is proud to be Australia's largest animal shelter, helping thousands of lost and abandoned animals each year. We are a not-for-profit organisation that has been serving the community for over 100 years. We are dedicated to providing compassionate veterinary care to all animals who find their way to us.

About the role

Each year The Lost Dogs’ Home foster carers provide a temporary, loving home for thousands of animals who are recovering from surgery, undergoing behaviour training, too young for adoption, or need some extra TLC outside of the busy shelter environment.  To support this program, LDH is seeking a passionate and experienced Veterinarian to provide veterinary services (including consultations, general treatment and surgical procedures) for our Foster Care Program animals.

A typical day will see you performing medical workups and consultations in a space solely dedicated for you to practice. Supported by a dedicated veterinary nurse, and with minimal client involvement, you will have the opportunity to diagnose and manage cases independently, as well as collaborate with and bounce ideas off other shelter veterinarians. You may be performing routine de-sexings and dentals, running bloods and cytology, or performing more complex surgeries and workups on our patients.

You will have the satisfaction of knowing you are contributing positively to the animal’s journey in the shelter, setting them up for their pathway into a forever home. You can be a part of placing animals on medication trials, treating animals with skin on thyroid conditions, post-operative recovery, the list goes on. In addition to working with our foster care patients, part of your role will be working in the shelter, providing you with a unique opportunity to practice animal care in line with a modern shelter medicine model.

About you:

We are looking for an experienced Veterinarian who is passionate about shelter medicine, and who is excited to work in a unique and varied role. Our new Veterinarian will be comfortable working in a busy, constantly evolving environment, and will be excited about using their skills and knowledge to make a difference in the lives of shelter animals.

Additionally, our ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 2 - 4 years of previous experience as a veterinarian
  • Well-developed soft tissue surgical skills
  • Sound emotional maturity and animal welfare ethics
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to delegate tasks effectively

What we can offer you

  • Opportunity to diagnose and manage cases independently with no client involvement
  • Fantastic career development with the challenge of shelter work and extensive opportunities to develop skills in animal welfare and the unique area of shelter medicine
  • Great work-life balance, an RDO each week, one in four weekends and no after-hours work
  • Excellent remuneration, including support and financial assistance for approved studies and developmental activities
  • Access to our Employee Assistance Program, including an onsite counselling service

If you are interested in the excitement and challenges of shelter medicine and want to use your skills and experience to help improve the wellbeing of pets in need, we would love to hear from you! Please apply now, ensuring you have attached a copy of your resume and a cover letter.
