The Animal Services team is responsible for supporting researchers using animals under the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research, the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, the requirements of the University Animal Ethics Committees, the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions and the Office of Gene Technology Regulator.

The Veterinarian, Animal Services will provide veterinary clinical care, develop bio-security policies, deliver training programs, assist in standard operating procedure (SOP) development, to ensure all animals used in research and teaching are cared for according to current animal welfare and research excellence best practice.

Working on-site at our Geelong Waurn Ponds location, you will develop a culture of care through training and support on campus. Although there may be occasions where you will need to receive calls from Animal Technicians outside of your work hours or attend on campus in an emergency, you will have flexibility to determine your regular days of work in this part-time role.

 

Your key responsibilities will include the need to:

  • Develop and maintain a sustainable program of veterinarian care to apply across all University animal facilities
  • Deliver highly specialised, best practice, veterinary clinical care and advice for animals used in research and teaching
  • Establish policy, systems and procedures to guide the provision of ethical laboratory animal care and management, including colony bio-security, applying specialist theory and practices to achieve best practice.
  • Actively promote, gain stakeholder support and deliver training and guidance to researchers, to drive change and improvement in animal management practices
  • Develop networks, enhance capability and promote a culture of care amongst academic researchers and higher degree by research (HDR) students
  • Plan for and manage risks and ensure timely delivery of programs and services
  • Maintain an understanding of contemporary practice in the ethical management of animals commonly used in research and teaching, providing subject matter expertise for the Animal Services team and influencing its effective application

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • A Veterinary Science degree registrable in the State of Victoria and extensive post qualification experience
  • Demonstrated experience working with, and applying laboratory animal medicine, for animals commonly used teaching and research
  • Experience developing SOPs and creating and delivering technical training
  • Extensive experience in the reviewing and reporting processes within a research environment
  • Knowledge of Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes, and other regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound diplomacy and discretion, handling sensitive and personal information in a confidential and appropriate manner.
