About the role:
To maintain the health of the entire animal collection at Sea World and Paradise Country through research, daily maintenance and preventative medicine. To assist with marine wildlife rescue and research projects under the Sea World Foundation.

 

Duties:
• Monitor all animals, native, domestic and livestock to maintain health and wellbeing and put into effect a disease prevention program for preventative medicine
• Monitor all and abide by, biosecurity alerts, government regulations/legislation & Australian Standards
• Undertake medical procedures, anesthesia and surgery as required and make the best possible judgement to treat in the shortest possible time frame
• Ensure the security of medicinal stock, manage diagnostics and treatments & administer drugs where necessary in the correct doses
• Oversee medical care of animal rehabilitation program and act as an advisor to the relevant team members
• Maintain vet equipment (x-ray machine, ultrasound, endoscopy)
• In the absence of the Head Veterinarian assume responsibilities to maintain the health of the entire animal collection and maintaining a strong positive relationship within the team.

 

Skills and Experience:
• Essential, tertiary qualification in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent; and eligible for full registration within the Veterinary Surgeons board of Queensland.
• Preferable post-graduate qualifications in zoo and wildlife medicine or accumulated experience to a similar level.
• Preferable clinical experience in the provision of veterinary care for wild animals in a zoo or similar environment, including medicine, surgery, disease investigation and chemical restraint.
• Preferable knowledge of animal husbandry and management practices as it related to wild animals’ care in a zoo or similar environment, including breeding, nutrition, biosecurity, animal housing, animal welfare and enrichment.
• Preferable experience in the treatment and rehabilitation of wildlife, veterinary management of free-ranging wildlife and veterinary research.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an attention to detail
• Self organisation, problem solving & time management skills
• Ability to work under pressure & multi-task with a proven ability to work with stakeholders from all business areas
• Demonstrated discretion and an ability to maintain confidentiality
• Demonstrated experience and skills in driving research and/or other collaborative partnerships.
