Description

University Veterinarian 

  • Part-time (3 days/week), Fixed term for 6 months
  • Based in Hobart
  • Deliver veterinary services and expertise to all animal species across UTAS facilities

 

The Opportunity

As a qualified Veterinarian, you will provide veterinary, competency and welfare advice to stakeholders, including the Animal Ethics Committee (AEC), serving as a conduit between the committee and the academic and technical community, to ensure that the welfare of the animals is paramount in the design and conduct of research and teaching.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide veterinary services and expertise to all animal species across UTAS facilities including treatment, colony health, husbandry, post-mortem examination, and disease response and control.
  • Oversee AEC approved activities involving the use of animals across all UTAS campuses and field locations, including monitoring of high-risk projects and the reporting of unexpected adverse events.
  • Assessing and documenting the competency of investigators to carry out specific procedures outlined in applications to the AEC in accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Regulations (Tas) 2012.
  • Assist the Manager of Research Ethics to develop training and education programs to educate stakeholders on their obligations in terms of animal ethics and animal welfare.
  • Management of the acquisition, distribution and proper usage of all scheduled drugs for animal use and compliance with the requirements of the Poisons Act (Regulations, 2008) on behalf of the University.­

 

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate:

  • A degree in veterinary medicine and registration as a veterinarian in a State or Territory of Australia, with post-registration work experience.
  • A commitment to animal welfare and knowledge of State and Federal legislative and ethical requirements.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills including the ability to design and deliver training seminars and the capacity to deal or negotiate sensitively with complex, emotive or contentious issues and engage with a range of stakeholders.
  • The ability to proactively identify and interpret emerging issues or trends in the animal ethics and animal welfare sectors and to develop and implement improvements or innovations in policy or practice, as appropriate.
  • A current unrestricted driver's licence and willingness to travel to remote or distant sites within Tasmania and an ability to work flexible hours.

 

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 9 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $147,129 comprising base salary within the range of $119,308 to $125,751 pro rata plus 17% superannuation.
