When grazing or moving stock around the state, the grazing industry uses a network of parcels of Crown land called travelling stock reserves (TSR). TSR’s include stock routes, which are corridors (ranging from 60 metres to almost two kilometres wide) that connect smaller watering and camping reserves, generally spaced 10 to 20 kilometres apart (based on a day’s walk for cattle or sheep).

The total TSR network in NSW covers almost two million hectares, and Local Land Services is responsible for the care, control and management of about 30% of TSRs in NSW, covering about 530,000 hectares.

About the role:
As a Travelling Stock Reserves Ranger (LSO) you’ll be responsible for delivering front line field services, projects and activities for the management, care and maintenance of travelling stock reserves in the Central West and Northern Tablelands regions. These could include upgrading and maintaining infrastructure such as fencing and water points, weed and pest management, monitoring and compliance.

The role also contributes to the delivery of the NSW Government’s biosecurity, emergency management and natural resource objectives and activities at a regional and local level.

We are looking for a person with a passion for land management, someone who can plan and implement on ground projects including managing contractors and Senior Field Officers. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills and be able to negotiate with diverse TSR stakeholders. Strong computer skills are necessary to fulfil reporting requirements.

For more information on the role you can download the role description.

About You:
To be successful in this role you must have strong communication and negotiation skills, proven leadership skills and demonstrated project management skills to implement on ground projects.

You’ll be comfortable speaking with landholders, clients and stakeholders and have the ability to undertake regulatory duties.

A genuine passion and understanding of rural issues, livestock and plant health including current approaches to the management of travelling stock reserves is also a must.

You will need to be self-motivated and be able to work independently as well as being a supportive and active team member in contributing to decision making and planning.

To be successful you’ll need to have:

  • A current NSW Driver Licence, and the capacity and willingness to undertake 4WD training course
  • A broad understanding of rural issues, livestock and plant health including current approaches to the active management of travelling stock reserves

You’ll also need to have appropriate qualifications and knowledge relevant to pesticide application.
