We have an exciting opportunity to join our Bacteriology & Mycology team as a Technician or Senior Technician on a fixed-term basis.
Our Technicians play a key role in diagnostic testing in our Animal Health Laboratory (AHL), New Zealand's national diagnostic testing lab. You'll work across our PC2 and PC3 laboratories, providing efficient, effective testing that contributes to New Zealand's biosecurity response.
You might be a Technician looking for your next move, or an experienced Senior Technician wanting to broaden your skill set – either way, we'd like to hear from you!
Mōu - About You
Our ideal candidate will have the following:
- BSc or equivalent in a biological science
- Knowledge and experience of microbiological laboratories.
- Ability to work within the constraints of, and follow the procedures used in a PC3+ containment laboratory
- A track record of demonstrating initiative, technical aptitude, sound judgement
You do not need to meet all of the role requirements to apply. We offer a breadth of development and learning opportunities and will welcome an application if you think you could make a great fit.
Mō tō mātou Rōpū - About the Team
Our Diagnostic and Surveillance Services (DSS) directorate are the guardians of Aotearoa New Zealand's biosecurity. We run a number of targeted and passive biosecurity surveillance programmes at any one time, identifying new pests and diseases that make it past our borders, providing research and analysis on their impact, and supporting eradication where we can. Our surveillance programme aren't just national – we also work with international partners to monitor biosecurity threats.
One of our greatest assets is our people. We've got a team of highly qualified, passionate science professionals who get to work on projects they're interested in. With employees from over 20 different countries, DSS is one of the most diverse, welcoming spaces in MPI.
Then there's our facilities. We've got the highest post-entry quarantine level plant facility in NZ. Our design-award winning Wallaceville biocontainment laboratory is one of the newest, most advanced biocontainment labs in the world. Opened in 2021, it's the most complex building in New Zealand. All our labs are reference labs, so our team works on complex cases, not standard diagnostic lab activities. We have the best, highest qualified people - critical thinkers solving dynamic problems. You'll work on challenging, interesting and unusual cases – often things that are so new to biosecurity that no one else is working on them.
