Description
Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
The College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, seeks an organized, motivated, and mission-driven Technician-III to support our experimental workflow, perform and analyze experiments, support a research laboratory that uses molecular and cell biology and mouse and genetics for studies of stem cells and cancer, and to maintain day-to-day operations in the Nikitin Laboratory.
Here at the Nikitin Lab, we are interested in understanding how aberrations in molecular and cellular mechanisms governing tissue homeostasis may lead to cancer initiation and progression. Our studies allowed us fuller appreciation of the importance of cell lineage and differentiation state context in determining specific genetic and phenotypical features of resulting neoplasms. Our current work is based on a combination of genetically modified mouse models, normal and neoplastic human organoids, single cell transcriptomics and 3D imaging. We are also pursuing technology-oriented research based on cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Once established and trained in the lab, we will rely on you to:
- Maintain mouse colonies and participate in experimental research as directed by the supervisor or principal investigator. Such experimental research activities include collection and histological processing of experimental materials, participation in the collection and morphometric analysis of digital images, growth of 2D and 3D cell cultures, and preparation of single-cell suspensions for sorting and transcriptome analysis.
- Assistance in experimental procedures.
- Maintain the lab including regular inspection and upkeep of common lab equipment, disposal of histological and tissue culture waste, preparing instruments, glassware, and reagents for procedures, ordering supplies, ensuring that lab personnel adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, and monitoring, training, and assisting undergraduate lab assistants.
This position is 39 hours per week, with some weekend hours required occasionally.
*This is a one-year term position; reappointment will be contingent upon funding and performance.
What you need to have:
- An Associate's degree and up to two years of laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in molecular biology, cell biology, or biochemistry or equivalent combination.
- Excellent oral and written communication and relational skills, strong attention to detail, and commitment to experimental goals.
- Propensity to learn computer skills (MS Office, email, internet searches, and data analysis programs).
- Capability to work precisely and confidently with strong manual dexterity and adhere to concurrent timelines regularly.
- Laboratory science is a team sport: organization is critical and working proactively will be as important as your team-orientedness.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree. Experience in a research laboratory and the techniques listed above along with handling mice.
The position requires successful completion of Cornell training courses (i.e. animal use, radioisotope training, and chemical safety).
