OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The mission of the Division of Antimicrobial Resistance is to define, advance, promote and monitor comprehensive policies and strategies that prevent, reduce, and mitigate drug-resistant infections and the overall impact of antimicrobial resistance globally based on the Global Action Plan on antimicrobial resistance and the 13th General Programme of Work of WHO and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It also provides global direction and strategic leadership for the global response to antimicrobial resistance in coordination with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Organization of Animal Health (OIE), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other UN and international agencies and facilitates the creation of common goal and vision through innovative partnerships, political engagement and promoting multisectoral engagement and synergy across the One Health spectrum in humans, animals, plants, food, feed and the environment. Its main objective is to support the development, implementation, and monitoring of One Health National Action Plans for Member States and facilitate the mainstreaming of effective strategies and actions including on the prevention and control of infection, antimicrobial stewardship, awareness creation and communication, research and development in their health and development agendas in partnership with FAO, OIE, UNEP and other key partners. The Department of Global Coordination and Partnership on Antimicrobial Resistance leads and coordinates the global One Health response to antimicrobial resistance through facilitating and managing strategic and innovative partnerships and providing secretariat services to global governance mechanisms on antimicrobial resistance in collaboration with FAO, OIE and other UN and international agencies as well as Member States and partners including the civil society and private sector. The Department facilitates the implementation of the recommendations of the UN Interagency Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, strengthen evidence-based and coordinated response against antimicrobial resistance across the One Health spectrum in humans, animals, plants, food, feed and the environment through the development and implementation of global vision, goals and targets, political advocacy and engagement, and facilitating innovative partnerships and contributes towards the achievement of the SDGs. It also promotes synergy, set priorities and advocate to unblock bottlenecks for research and development for antimicrobial resistance across the One Health spectrum.

 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Manage and coordinate implementation of One Health activities and strategic workplans of the Tripartite and UNEP Joint Secretariat in close collaboration with FAO, OIE, UNEP and WHO regional and country offices.

2. Provide strategic direction for the management and implementation of the Multi-Partner Trust Fund on AMR.

3. Lead, coordinate and advocate for the effective response of the Tripartite and UNEP on antimicrobial resistance at the regional and country levels through One Health approach and harvesting best practices and expertise on functional One Health responses.

4. Coordinate strategic support across the One Health spectrum with all internal and external partners including UN, multilateral agencies and development banks, bilateral donors, civil society and private sector for antimicrobial resistance to facilitate the updating and implementation of National One Health Action Plans on Antimicrobial Resistance.

5. Conduct other related activities that will facilitate implementation across the One Health spectrum in collaboration and coordination of all partners and stakeholders.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Advanced university degree in Public Health, Veterinary Medicine or another health related field relevant to the functions of the position.

 

Desirable:

Experience

 

Essential:

1. At least 10 years of professional experience in communicable diseases, antimicrobial resistance or public health.

2. Demonstrated experience at the international level.

3. Proven extensive experience in coordinating engagement of partners including governments, UN agencies and civil society organizations.

 

Desirable:

1. Experience working at national and/or regional level.

2. Demonstrated experience managing human and financial resources.

Skills

Extensive collaboration and cooperation with diverse partners across the UN and multilateral agencies as well as broader multisectoral stakeholders including the civil society and private sectors to deliver results in supporting the implementation of effective national responses across the One Health spectrum through advocacy and technical support. Highly developed communication and interpersonal, diplomatic and negotiation skills are required.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 90,664 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 6256 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
