Description

  • Full time, continuing opportunity to provide essential technical support to clinicians, researchers and students

  • Located on the Camperdown Campus at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science

  • Base Salary $78K - $87K (HEO5) + 17% superannuation

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, we are seeking to employ a Technical Officer (Diagnostic Microbiology) to provide expert technical support to clinicians, researchers and students using the diagnostic/clinical laboratory facilities Veterinary Pathology Diagnostic Services (VPDS); including, but not restricted to, microbiology and immunoassays. VPDS offers a low-medium throughput service with a focus on engagement, quality, inquiry, and sustainability, to support teaching in our veterinary and veterinary bioscience programs, and support research within the school.

Laboratory practices and facilities are best practice, with MALDI-TOF biotyping and a strong interest in supporting clients in antimicrobial stewardship. We encourage engagement with clinicians, particularly those in the university’s veterinary teaching hospitals, and our school’s other veterinary pathology laboratories at Camden campus. You will be working with leading academics in veterinary microbiology. We are a small laboratory so there will be opportunity for you to diversify your skills across our molecular diagnostics and clinical pathology sections, as appropriate.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • coordinate the daily operation of the Laboratory facility, carry out technical and electronic maintenance and development of laboratory equipment

  • undertake analysis guided by expertise and established procedures/standards; preparing and carry out experiments related to the diagnostic/research work being undertaken by the work area

  • collect and record qualitative data in preparation for analysis by diagnostic/research staff

  • ensure that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards are met in the work area and are aligned to the University’s WHS policy.

  • a tertiary qualification in a relevant field to work in Diagnostic Veterinary laboratory together with some work experience and willingness to undertake further studies to better develop their skills in laboratory techniques/methods

  • demonstrated experience in diagnostic (clinical) veterinary or medical microbiology. You should also outline any skills or experience in other disciplines, such as molecular diagnostics or clinical pathology, as well as any experience working in NATA accredited facilities

  • intermediate to advanced computer skills, including storing research data appropriately in databases and/or statistical analysis programs, and extracting relevant reporting and/or analysis

  • sound working knowledge and acute awareness of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment including experience in working with hazardous substances with well-rounded experience in implementing safety procedures relevant to the laboratory

  • strong verbal and written communication skills, with proven understanding of diagnostic service provision and ability to communicate with clients (i.e., veterinary practitioners) and colleagues

  • proven ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision.

Please outline your relevant skills and experience in your cover letter and attach to your online application.
