Since 2005, the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) has been one of Australia's leading marine research facilities. We support research through our university partners across all aspects of marine science, with a particular focus on marine conservation and restoration programs. The Role

Reporting to the Project Manager as well as our key Principle Investigators, the Technical Officer will support an exciting project under the Innovation Research Acceleration Program (IRAP) funded via National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) ‘Delivering knowledge to ensure sustainable use of the NSW marine estate’. The role will plan and execute marine fieldwork across a broad geographic area in NSW to assist with the catch, tagging and release of key fish species (Bluespot Flathead and Trevally) as well as Australian Fur Seals and Sea Turtles. The role, based at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) will work in close partnership with key stakeholders in the recreational and commercial fisheries sector as well as collaborate with industry and government partners.

This role is an 18-month position until December 2026, inline with Government Funding for the project.

Our Ideal Candidate

  • Education: A degree in marine science or equivalent qualifications relevant to the role requirements
  • Certifications - required
    • A current NSW boating licence (or equivalent) or coxswain skipper certificate
    • A full drivers licence
  • Certifications - desirable: 
    • PADI Rescue Diver or Scientific Diver (or equivalent) to conduct SCUBA
    • The ability to hold an operational dive medical (AS/NZS 2299.1),
  • Attention to Detail: Exceptional project management and administrative skills.
  • Fieldwork Experience: Proficient in marine fieldwork, including boating and diving, with relevant PADI or ADAS certifications.
  • Process Documentation: Experience in documenting and refining processes, procedures, and policies.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent general and scientific communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with researchers and other facility users. Strong relationship-building abilities with key stakeholders are essential.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to troubleshoot issues and develop innovative solutions in a field-based environment.
  • Team Player: Strong collaborative skills with the ability to work effectively within a team as well as independently.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with data management software and tools commonly used in marine science research.
  • Adaptability: Capacity to adapt to changing conditions and handle unexpected challenges in remote and diverse environments.
  • Physical Fitness: Good physical condition to handle the demands of fieldwork, including lifting equipment and working in various weather conditions.
