About the role
We are seeking to create a casual pool of animal loving assistants, to support our teaching teams delivering in Animal Science.

The Technical Assistant – Animal Care is responsible for providing class support and ensuring animal welfare of the animals kept on TAFE NSW Richmond premises. Duties cover Animal husbandry including feeding and watering, Hygiene Routines, and observation of all species – checking the wellness of animals and their surrounds as well as maintenance requirements. Richmond campus is home to small companion animals such as chickens, birds, fish and cats, and larger livestock animals including horses, cattle and sheep.

A rotating roster will be created to fulfil obligations under the Animal Research and relevant animal welfare acts, where you could expect to work one weekend in four. Occasionally there may be weekday shifts available to cover periods of leave. It is expected the shift would take a minimum of 3.5 hours to provide husbandry to all animals. A casual loading rate will be applied on weekends and public holidays.

Appropriate training in horse handling and farm equipment will be provided.

 

About you
Your demonstrated experience working with a range of animals or in related work areas, and ability to effectively organise resources will be integral to this role. You have a positive can-do attitude and use your initiative to resolve issues, have good communication skills, record management and work effectively in a team.
A typical shift might look like this:

  • Provide husbandry, including feeding, changing water, Hygiene routines - changing bedding (where necessary)
  • Checking the welfare of animals and reporting any suspected illness or injury
  • Checking fencing and surroundings to ensure safety of animals
  • Record keeping, recording the completion of all feeding, husbandry and observations.

 

We would love to hear from you if you can meet the following essential requirements:

  • Demonstrated skills and experience in companion animal care and husbandry over a wide range of species.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and correctly operate a wide range of equipment relating to companion animal activities.
  • Class C driver’s licence with the capacity to travel for TAFE NSW business purposes as required.
  • Good organisational skills ability to work with minimal supervision.

While not essential, a current First Aid Certificate, or willingess to obtain is desirable
