The Team
The position of Technical Assistant forms a part of the Agriculture Victoria Research Branch of the Agriculture Victoria Group.
Agriculture Victoria works with industry and community stakeholders to support the agriculture, food and fibre sector to become more globally competitive, innovative and resilient. The group delivers a wide range of services such as:
- Policy and program development for agriculture, food safety, food security, biosecurity, agriculture and veterinary chemicals
- Emergency preparedness, response and recovery
- Research in science and technology leading to innovative farming systems, products and services
- Community and industry engagement
Agriculture Victoria Research serves as DJPR's agricultural research and development body. It provides a discipline-based science and technology delivery function in numerous areas, including Plant Sciences, Genomics and Cellular Sciences, and Agriculture Resources Sciences, using an ‘innovation ecosystem' that converges government, industry/agribusiness and academia/knowledge centres into clustered and collaborative networks.
The Role
The role of the Technical Assistant will provide technical support to the field, laboratory and glasshouse activities of the plant pathology research program at Horsham, enabling scientists to conduct high quality research experiments.
Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to:
- Provide technical assistance with preparation, packing, sowing, sampling, management and harvest of field, glasshouse and laboratory experiments
- Collect and collate field and laboratory data
- Maintain a collection of seed storage of cereals and pulses
- Maintain laboratory equipment
- Adopt and apply WH&S policies and procedures
This position reports to the Plant Pathologist.
About You
The successful candidate for this position will have a good aptitude for working within the field of grains research, as well as the capacity to learn techniques for assessing and growing plant-based diseases in a laboratory setting.
Additionally, the successful applicant will possess:
- Current Victorian Driver's Licence
- Ability to efficiently and accurately pack seed for trials and process plant/soil/grain samples
- Proven ability to accurately and efficiently collate and manage experimental data
- The ability to use and maintain laboratory equipment
- Ability to safely work independently, sometimes in remote areas
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a project team and communicate effectively with others
- Sound initiative and organisational skills
Whilst not essential, the following would be well regarded:
- Education to Year 12, with passes in four subjects including English and one science subject
- Understanding of grain production in Australia
- Relevant formal training and/or experience
