The Mycoplasma bovis Programme has been operating since May 2018, and we're working on a world-first effort to eradicate this cattle disease.  The environment is dynamic with continual change; to thrive you will be a veterinarian who enjoys working at pace and be comfortable dealing with ambiguity and incomplete information to deal with complex problems.  An ability to retain objectivity and communicate with impact under pressure in a political and regulatory environment is essential. Come and join our team where you will provide veterinary and epidemiological expertise to the programme.  The purpose of the Team Manager, Veterinary and Epidemiology role is to lead a team of veterinary and epidemiological technical advisors and their associated administrative functions.  This is a senior role and will from time to time deputise for the Manager, Disease Control and Service Integration.

Responsibilities include: the design and delivery of national M. bovis surveillance programmes; oversight of the genomic network analysis; complex case management and review work; translation of policy into processes and procedures to support effective and consistent delivery of disease control activities and sample result analysis and reporting.

The team provide essential veterinary and epidemiological advice and support to operational teams within the directorate as well as written technical justification for operational activities and decisions.

This is a 2 year fixed term position through to the end of June 2023.

 

Skills and Experience

As a skilled professional you will have a veterinary degree registerable in New Zealand, and preferably a Postgraduate qualification that includes training and or aptitude for Veterinary Epidemiology.  You will be knowledgeable in the areas of animal health, and cattle farming systems and be able to demonstrate experience of working in a biosecurity and or regulatory environment.  It would be beneficial to have experience working with New Zealand cattle farmers.

You will also have expertise in the following areas:

  • Critical evaluation of science and evidence.
  • Veterinary Risk Assessment including:
    • A sound working knowledge of the principles of veterinary epidemiology
    • Measures of disease frequency, sampling methods and diagnostic test performance.
    • Management of complex cases, permits, and out of specification recommendations
  • Critical analysis of evidence, information and data and making recommendations
  • Planning and organisation; priority setting and the meeting of deadlines
  • Experience in developing team members
  • Experience in managing relationships and consultation with an assortment of external stakeholders.
  • Experience in analysing technical issues and making business decisions with financial impact.
  •  Strong understanding of farm systems or farming experience.
