The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has an exciting leadership opportunity with the chance to coach and lead a team of compliance professionals in a sector crucial to New Zealand's national interests.

The Compliance & Response – AIS Directorate administers legislation across sectors including the Animal Welfare Act 1999 and NAIT Act 2012. As Team Leader Animal Welfare and NAIT Compliance Auckland you will be responsible for 8 to 10 staff (Animal Welfare Inspectors and NAIT Officers).
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Provide operational leadership and coordination of the effective and efficient delivery of animal welfare and NAIT compliance enforcement services.
- Foster a strong enforcement culture within your staff
- Contribute to and support prosecution decision making for breaches of animal welfare, NAIT and other legislation.
- Develop and maintain local sectoral relationships within MPI, industry, interest groups and other agencies.
- Contribute to the development of policy and legislation by providing capability and specialist knowledge.

To be successful in this role you will need to:
- Be able to support your team by demonstrating a strong work ethic, and technical knowledge of both Animal Welfare and NAIT legislation
- Be responsible for ensuring your staff have the right tools to be able to do their jobs effectively within organisational constraints
- Ability to complete regular staff performance reviews and planning processes
- Work well under pressure and prioritise competing demands
- Be able to produce effective plans, performance measures and reporting frameworks to support the work of your team, the district and wider Ministry
- You will have a previous track record of delivering timely results while maintaining a clear focus on long term and strategic goals
Skills & Experience
- Experience in animal production systems and knowledge of agricultural sectors
- Previous experience in a regulation and enforcement position
- A developed understanding of MPI's role as a regulator and significant experience in managing both internal and external relationships
- Skills in initiating, influencing and managing change with both industry stakeholders and the people you manage
- Project management skills, including experience in achieving effective outcomes in situations where there are diverse outcomes, would be an advantage
Qualification
- Tertiary qualifications in relevant disciplines or compliance and enforcement experience is desirable
- Management based qualification or relevant experience is desirable.

- is a citizen of, and/or has resided continuously in one or more of the following countries for the last ten (10) years: either Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK or the USA; and has a background history that is verifiable and can be assessed as appropriate by the NZSIS towards a recommendation of suitability for a security clearance at a higher level.
