Where will l work?
The Western Local Land Service region is the largest in NSW, covering 314,500 km² or 40 per cent of the state.  It is larger than Victoria and Tasmania combined.  Despite its size, it is the least densely populated region, with a population of approximately 42,873 people (18,500 of whom live in the city of Broken Hill).

 

About the role
As Team Leader Animal Biosecurity and Welfare, you will lead a small team of District Veterinary Officers, conduct animal disease investigations as well as facilitating the delivery of a range of projects and programs to assist in prevention, preparedness, detection and response to biosecurity threats and animal diseases of state and national significance. You will be supported by the Manager Biosecurity and Emergency Services and mentored by a fantastic vet team, get to travel around the beautiful outback of Western NSW and get to work with wonderful landholders.

 

In this role, you will:

  • Lead the Animal Biosecurity and Welfare function and team to ensure effective and efficient implementation of strategies and plans, as well as provide normal district veterinarian duties.
  • Ensure the objectives of the NSW Biosecurity Strategy are met at a regional level through effective delivery of Animal Biosecurity and Welfare and Emergency Response strategic, business and functional plans
  • Lead animal biosecurity surveillance activities to ensure rapid identification of new and emerging biosecurity threats and assist in the implementation of response and post recovery programs
  • Undertake disease investigations in all species and provide advice and analysis to ensure timely response to biosecurity threats
  • Promote and advocate for best practice Animal Biosecurity and Welfare practices
  • Lead and deliver compliance programs to ensure legislated biosecurity obligations including pest and disease management and livestock traceability meet national performance standards
  • Implement plans and strategies for engagement with the community and other key stakeholders to enhance understanding of the animal biosecurity and welfare functions of LLS

 

Our ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills to be able to communicate effectively, build professional relationships with team members, community members and other external stakeholders. Provide positive customer experiences for our landholders and have initiative to progress and deliver outcomes.

 

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree in Veterinary Science registrable in NSW and registration with the NSW Veterinary Surgeons Board
  • Tertiary qualifications in a discipline relevant to the primary industries portfolio and/or equivalent experience in leadership and management of services to primary industries or emergency management sector
  • Current NSW Driver Licence and the ability and willingness to travel
  • Capacity to hold a NSW firearms licence or equivalent, and a Statement of Attainment (to Use Firearms to humanely destroy animals AQF AHCVPT203A, AHCPMG304) and be appointed as an Authorised Officer and Stock Inspector

 

The successful applicant in this role may be required to undergo a police check, health assessment and/or other assessments as required.
