Project

Introduction of Advanced Health Management Tools for Enhanced Pig Production, Product Safety and Quality in Hong Kong

The overall aim of this new project is to support the pig farming industry and introduce advanced health management tools that will enhance pig production, product safety and quality in Hong Kong, supported by a production and health management plan as well as a clinical pig health service.  There will be a specific emphasis on establishing a culture of prudent use of antimicrobials amongst pig farmers.

Duties

  1. Develop production and health management programme for pig farm clients in Hong Kong;
  2. Provide production and health management service to pig farm clients in Hong Kong, including visits to local pig farms, assessment of production and health condition of pig farms, performing disease diagnoses, and providing recommendations for disease prevention and control;
  3. Provide training and supervise veterinary assistants;
  4. Maintain pig veterinary practice records, and work with farmers to produce farm level electronic records on pig health and production;
  5. Conduct research in pig health and production relevant to Hong Kong pig farms;
  6. Contribute to Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programmes provided by the University; and
  7. Perform any other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements

A DVM or equivalent from a HKVSB recognized institution with 3-5 years’ experience in veterinary practice or any other relevant industry.  Possession of a valid Hong Kong driving license (Class 1 or 2) and proficiency in Cantonese are required.  Proficiency in Putonghua; and experience in commercial clinic set-up (including in-house lab and pharmacy, and electronic record systems) are desirable.

Excellent interpersonal skills and willingness to communicate directly with veterinarians, farmers and students; ability to work with individuals from different disciplines; excellent supervisory, multi-tasking, organisational and problem solving skills, with ability to evaluate new processes, implement plans, and develop preventive/corrective actions; cultural sensitivity and resilience to overcome initial resistance to changes/perception challenges and foster a cooperative approach; and ability to work along with translator across cultural barriers with farmers are required.

Successful candidates may be considered for appointment on a full-time or part-time basis.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits for full-time appointment include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
