St. George's University invites applicants for a full-time faculty position as a Veterinary Technician/Farrier at the Demonstrator level in the Department of Large Animal Medicine in the School of Veterinary Medicine, beginning 8/1/2025
Overview:

Essential Functions - Veterinary Technician
The Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive technical support for veterinary students and faculty in the diagnosis, treatment, and surgical care of large animals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Support: Assist veterinarians in the care, treatment, and surgical procedures of large animals, including prepping animals for surgery, monitoring anesthesia, administering medications, and post-operative care.
- Patient Handling: Safely handle and restrain large animals for diagnostic procedures, medical treatments, and surgeries. Ensure animal comfort and welfare throughout all interactions.
- Diagnostic Procedures: Assist in diagnostic imaging (radiography, ultrasound), laboratory sample collection (blood, fecal, urine), and processing, as well as other diagnostic tests as requested by veterinarians.
- Equipment Maintenance: Clean, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments, diagnostic tools, and medical equipment used in large animal practice. Ensure that all equipment is functional and properly stored.
- Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and detailed patient medical records, including treatment protocols, medications administered, and progress reports, using veterinary management software.
- Student Education: Mentor and guide veterinary students during their rotations, teaching them proper handling techniques, medical protocols, and diagnostic procedures.
- Emergency Care: Assist with triage, stabilization, and emergency care of large animals in critical condition, both during regular hours and on-call situations as needed.
- Field Service: Assist in off-site veterinary care for large animals in the field, including livestock farms, providing technical support for mobile diagnostics, treatments, and surgeries.
Essential Functions - Farrier
The Farrier serves a vital role in both the clinical and educational aspects of equine health and hoof care. The job description generally includes a mix of hands-on work with horses and donkeys and support in the academic development of veterinary students.
Key responsibilities:
- Perform routine trimming and shoeing of horses to maintain hoof health.
- Address specific hoof-related issues such as cracks, lameness, or imbalances through corrective shoeing techniques.
- Collaborate with veterinarians to manage complex hoof problems such as laminitis, navicular disease, or injuries.
Clinical Support:
- Assist in clinical cases related to equine podiatry under the supervision of veterinary professionals.
- Implement farrier interventions in rehabilitating horses with hoof-related conditions.
- Maintain accurate records of the work done on each horse, including treatment plans and follow-up schedules.
Teaching and Education:
- Provide hands-on training and demonstrations for veterinary students in hoof care, shoeing techniques, and equine foot anatomy.
- Deliver lectures or workshops on equine hoof care, farrier techniques, and related subjects.
- Participate in the development of educational materials and case studies for student learning.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology or equivalent from an accredited program; certification or licensure (CVT, LVT, RVT) preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience as a veterinary technician, with a focus on large animal medicine.
- Strong understanding of large animal anatomy, physiology, and veterinary medical procedures.
- Experience with anesthesia monitoring, diagnostic equipment operation, and surgical assistance in large animals.
- Excellent animal handling and restraint skills with large animals, including horses, cattle, and small ruminants.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to multitask, work efficiently under pressure, and maintain a high level of attention to detail.
- Physical ability to handle large animals and stand for long periods, lift heavy equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Availability for on-call and weekend shifts as needed.
- Farrier Qualifications: Certification as a professional farrier, preferably from a recognized professional organization.
