Objective
The faculty of St George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine are dedicated to upholding the mission of providing an international, culturally diverse environment in which students learn the knowledge, skills and attitudes required for postgraduate training in the Veterinary profession. Faculty will inspire students to develop compassion, curiosity, tolerance and a commitment to animals and society, a dedication to life-long learning and an understanding of the vital role of research in Veterinary Medicine.
Essential Functions - Professor
Instructional Activities:
SVM has employed a new systems-based integrated curriculum for its DVM program. The responsibilities of the position include teaching in interdisciplinary coursework as part of the curriculum, as well as participation in clinical skills laboratories and professionalism programs. The faculty will be expected to contribute to large animal medicine (focus on livestock) components of the curriculum. The position will also require involvement in ambulatory service for the purposes of teaching and providing service to the agricultural community. Participation in university academic affairs is expected, as well as contributions of scholarly work in research.
- Develop and deliver course and lesson content in the core DVM curriculum
- Support departmental teaching in the graduate program and the pre-veterinary program.
- Support the Integrated Team Instruction (ITI) delivery of the DVM program.
- Participate in the professionalism courses.
- Contribute to the mentorship system for all students enrolled on the DVM program.
- Practice continuous quality improvement of the courses and content delivered by the department
- Contribute to curriculum review and innovation.
· Research and Scholarly Activities:
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Establish a research program and participate in collaborative research
- Actively engage in a research topic in a relevant area
- Support student research and learning through supervision and mentoring of selected students
- Actively participate in scientific/educational conferences and Continued Veterinary Education

Faculty Management:
- Work with Faculty HR regarding the recruitment of suitably qualified faculty in keeping with departmental needs
- Assist with the transitioning of newly recruited faculty into their respective roles
- Conduct annual faculty assessments or evaluations
- Assign course directors based on specialization
- Oversee the recruitment of visiting professors
Staff Management:
- Work with Staff HR regarding recruitment of suitably qualified staff in keeping with the departmental needs
- Assist with the transitioning of newly recruited staff into their respective roles
- Conduct annual staff assessments or evaluations
- Approve overtime for tasks that are completed outside regular hours of work
Accreditation:
- Provide departmental data for accreditation agency reports
- Ensure that the department upholds AVMA Accreditation Standards for its academic and clinical operations
- Assist with preparation/readiness for accreditation site visits
Facilities:
- Ensure that facilities for faculty, staff and students are conducive for teaching and learning
Curriculum Development and Scheduling:
- Monitor and develop the curriculum under the Department’s jurisdiction, and overseeing scheduling and delivery of courses in the DVM Degree Program
Research:
- Provide mentorship for research activities amongst faculty within the Department to encourage and stimulate research productivity
Strategic Plan:
- Work in collaboration with the SVM Dean/Senior Associate Dean and the University Administration regarding strategic planning initiatives for the Department of Large Animal Medicine and Surgery
Budget:
- Ensure that there is adequate funding for departmental related expenses - Salaries, Lab and Medical Supplies, Capex, Facilities, etc. in collaboration with the SVM Dean and Finance Executive
Policies and Procedures:
- Interpret and uphold existing University policies and directives
- Report to the Dean/Senior Associate Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, directly on all matters relating to administration/governance of the Department
- Carry out other responsibilities assigned by the Dean/Senior Associate Dean as necessary
Qualifications & Experience
- DVM or equivalent degree
- Graduate degree in related discipline
- Training and experience in large animal medicine (focus on livestock preferred)
Desirable Qualities
- Diplomate status in a relevant clinical specialty
- PhD
- The successful applicant should possess excellent interpersonal communication skills and a positive attitude toward student enrichment in all areas of academic and practical preparatory coursework.
- Clinical teaching experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Commitment to the education of Veterinary students, instructors, and animal handlers
