Description
The opportunity
North Queensland Veterinary Service is seeking new veterinarian to join our team in early 2022. The role is based in Edmonton, on the southern outskirts of Cairns in Tropical Far North Queensland. We would welcome applicants seeking either full time (our full time vets work 4 days per week) or part time employment, and although our preference for this role is an experience applicant, we are also recruiting for a graduate to join our team.
North Queensland Veterinary Service focuses on horses and companion animals in the residential growth corridor of Edmonton and Gordonvale, just south of Cairns. The clinic is growing rapidly, and our service area stretches from Innisfail about 1 hour south of Cairns, north to Port Douglas and Mossman.
In 2022, we expect the team will be made up of four veterinarians and six veterinary nurses and receptionists. The clinic offers all of the expected routine and preventative care services for pets and horses, such as vaccination, desexing and dentistry, along with emergency treatment of medical and surgical cases. We also provide pregnancy testing, bull fertility testing and ambulatory cattle services including obstetrics.
The clinic is only a few years old and boasts a beautiful, open plan with tropical gardens and plenty of space. We have IDEXX in house pathology lab, DR xray with floating table, small animal and equine ultrasound, IM3 dental suite with dental xray, and mobile crush and dental kit including power float for horses. Plans are underway for a significant clinic expansion in 2022, along with construction of a horse facility including undercover crush, lunge pad and day yards adjoining the clinic. Our nursing team is experienced, well qualified and an amazing support to our team.
Opportunities exist for in house training and mentorship from our senior veterinary staff who hold a range of post graduate qualifications including multiple ANZCVS memberships. Our senior veterinarians from Malanda and Atherton visit regularly for support, training and mentorship in more advanced equine, cattle and small animal medicine and surgery, including orthopaedics.
This role may be perfect for you if…
- …you are seeking a position where you will get to contribute to a rapidly growing clinic and focus on your passion for horses and small animals.
- …you want to be surrounded by people who love their work and know how important the balance between support and opportunities are in your first year in practice.
- …you want to be an appreciated and respected part of your community.
- …you love an outdoor lifestyle, featuring rolling countryside, pristine rainforest and waterfalls, golden beaches, turquoise tropical waters and endless expanses of bush.
- …you highly value the opportunity to learn and grow, both as a veterinarian and a well-rounded person.
The day to day role
North Queensland Veterinary Service is a rapidly growing clinic with a diverse and interesting equine and small animal caseload. We are one of the few clinics servicing horses on the tropical coast, so there is considerable opportunity for both routine wellness visits and emergency treatment of horses. Our companion animal work is typical of a general practice, featuring wellness checks, vaccinations, dentals, desexing, and the usual array of sick pet and emergency cases. We make use of the local Cairns 24 hour emergency centre to manage our after-hours caseload.
A typical day may include:
- Routine and first opinion small animal consultations including vaccinations and health checks, skin conditions, lameness, ear and eye consultations, sick animals, tick paralysis, snake bites and other emergency presentations.
- Routine small animal surgery and procedures, including desexings, lump removals, dentistry and wound treatments.
- Ambulatory equine farm visits, including colic management, stitch ups, ophthalmic conditions, vaccinations, dentistry and other first opinion visits.
Our ideal candidate
Our ideal candidates will be passionate about equine and companion animal practice and keen to take the next step in their clinical veterinary and leadership career path.
To thrive in this role, you should have well developed diagnostic, surgery and client communication skills, and be able to relate to people from all walks of life. An ability to work independently and willingness to provide mentoring and support to recent graduates is important, although there is plenty of support from clinic colleagues, our experienced nursing team and the senior vets across our group.
Other important attributes include:
- Excellent communication skills with colleagues and clients
- A caring, compassionate nature
- Someone who solves problems and has a ‘can do’ attitude
- A desire to make life easier for your colleagues and clients
- A positive outlook and desire to have fun and enjoy your work
- Registration with the Queensland Veterinary Surgeons Board or other recognised jurisdiction.
The position details
- Full time position - 4 days per week | Part time roles would also be considered
- Workday from 7:30am to 5:30pm with 1 hour lunch break
- 1-in-4 after hours roster - some Saturday morning work required when on call
- Salary dependent on experience
- Generous CPD allowance
- Income protection insurance
- AVA and Special Interest Group Membership paid
- Clinic VIN and CVE membership
